My sister (early 70's) sent me a couple text messages saying that it was real good and exciting. She sees a lot of movies so I would take it as good review from a movie goer..

Saw it earlier tonight. A VERY satisfying movie experience. Yeah it was over the top and some of the story stretches credulity past it’s limits, but it was fun as hell and didn’t bang you over the head with messaging. It was pretty much pure escape entertainment as summer movies were originally intended. Highly recommend.

We saw it in an Imax theater on Memorial Day and it was nothing short of awesome.

2 things:
1. It was what a summer blockkbuster should be, loud, fast, and fun. Really great movie.
2. my 15 year old's first comment after exiting the theater was that Penny was hot... I had to tell him she's over 50! He said I was full of shite...Jennifer Connelly is still a smoke show.

Does it live up to the hype?
Bro.... fighter jets, on the big screen, with maximum sound on.

the original is bad so low expectations
Just stop already.
At the MINIMUM the film was revolutionary for it's cinematography. No modern aviation movie
had come close to it's mid air shots and angles along with the aircraft carrier pans and aircraft interactions.
NOTHING had come close up until then...not The Right Stuff or Clint Eastwood's Firefox and little if any CGI was used in the original.

It's funny, I've never been as wowed by her as others on here over the years. She's obviously always been pretty but just never tripped my trigger as much as other actresses. Count me solidly in the wowed group now.

But the Tomcat (and every other two/multiple seat tactical jet that I am aware of) was equipped with a selectable ejection system that allowed for either occupant to initiate ejection or the rear seater/crew to eject themselves. The idea is that the pilot at the controls will always be fighting to recover the aircraft until the last possible second (or later!) Therefore, if you don't trust the RIO to initiate ejection, give him control over the rear seat only. Regardless, the actual pilot is always the last to go. With great power comes great responsibility!!

Who had the power of selection - pilot or back-seater?
Wife and I saw it today on a standard screen.
It was a fun ride for sure.
I was sweating from the flying scenes which were very good. Curious as to how much was real and how much wasn't; i know they put alot of work into actually flying as much as possible.

Yes it is worth it. Just got out of a Dolby Showing. SEE IT IN DOLBY or IMAX.

The actual switch is in the rear cockpit. In Normal mode the rear seater only ejects himself, but the pilot can eject both, rear seat first. In Aft Initiate mode either occupant pulling the handle ejects both, rear seat still goes first.
Switch position was generally a briefing item before the flight.

She had a body to kill for back in the day and was the 80s Alexandra Daddario. Body is no longer, but she's still smoking.

Saw Top Gun last night in the theater. Highly recommend seeing it on the big screen. The action sequences can only be truly appreciated in the theater. Kind of cheesy for most of the movie, but very fun.

The mission they flew was oddly similar to Star Wars A New Hope - Death Star Attack
