Still haven't seen it yet, so not wanting to read spoilers. But wanted to see what those who have seen it generally think. It got high praise in the early critic reviews, but those tend to skew positive. Does it live up to the hype?

It's just a really fun time at the movies. I don't think the script is some masterpiece, but who really cares with this type of film. The flight scenes are truly awesome.

The best description I have heard is that is is way better than it has any business being.

It’s awesome. The action is incredible, the acting is on point, the script and dialogue is actually very very good. There’s real depth, growth, and conflict here. This is the best movie of 2022, and there’s been some bangers this year.

The original is a fun action-packed adventure with cheese-ball, cringe-inducing dialogue that is so over the top self-serious while being silly as to be essentially beyond parody.

This sequel takes the action of the first and brings a level of heart, conflict, and nuance to the dialogue that the original really lacked. This one manages to be serious without feeling cynical. It manages to be funny without being corny. It has heart without seeming cheesy. The cast is diverse without feeling forced. The old characters are flawed without being emasculated. There’s no woke preaching. It’s just a fun movie, with fantastic practical effects, and a tight script that I cannot imagine a single human watching it and not, in good faith, enjoying the experience.

It’s the kind of movie experience we’ve all been begging for over the last decade. It lives up to and surpasses the hype.

The plot is thin and derivative, to say the least....you’ll get flashbacks to other movies.

But the movie is well-crafted and the visuals and sound effects are world class.

The fact that there is so little CGI might actually be a detriment to the movie’s Oscar chances in the technical categories. But it should clean sweep the sound awards...edit, and editing and cinematography, provided we don’t see anything better the rest of the year.

Dang, Bob, you missed your calling as a movie critic. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I like your review.

I think you'll be sad when Goose dies. Clearly, Maverick could have pulled his own damn ejection cord.

It’s a solid action movie. Ignore the plot holes and you’ll have a blast watching it.

It leans heavily on nostalgia and predictable tropes but it's well worth seeing.

Thank you! I have considered starting a YouTube channel or podcast to review movies and tv shows, but I don’t feel like I can add anything unique to the blogosphere. I’m just another wannabe screenwriter who never got around to finishing any of his projects, yet takes delight in criticizing the works of others who actually do this for a living.

Good movie. Good review, but I thought the acting was mixed; some good and some bad.

Cruise did a very good job. Connelly was good, but her character was a bit flat and her dialogue was very vanilla. Ham was an angry Don Draper the whole movie, but he also suffered from having a very one dimensional character to play. The younger cast all played believably well, with Rooster being the best character of the bunch (as designed).

I’ll be honest and say I don’t watch a lot of YouTube movie reviews. So take this for what it’s worth.

But.

You just did bob. Best way I’ve heard this movie described. And 100% accurate.

Also, is anyone really adding anything unique? Or is it more about likeability and connection. Sure you’ll be saying a lot of what’s being said but you might just do it in a way people enjoy. I enjoyed your top gun 2 review.

It was a great 2 hours and 20 minutes. Everyone was excited in the ride home from the theatre.

Go see it. It won’t win best picture but was a fun ride.
