In essence he played John Wayne in every movie he was ever in. He was not known as a character actor. I love the Duke. I thought most folks would get the inference.

happy to see he's been omitted...
Cruise is great at what he does. But I think Tom cruise basically plays Tom Cruise in his movies.

Has to be? Why does he have to be?
He has won a Golden Globe for Best Actor and nabbed Best Actor Noms from the Oscars.

You could say the same about Clint Eastwood,John Wayne or Keven Costner.
Don't have to be from the method acting school to be considered a great actor. Matter of fact, there are LOTS of bad method actors.

I think it should be differentiated between character acting and method acting. Acting in essence is getting into character. If your character happens to always be the same character over dozens of films then it is assumed it is not a character but just the actor playing themself.
How about let’s add Jean-Claude Van Damme to the list.

No.
Caffey, Maverick, Hunt, Les Grossman, Joel Goodson, Charlie Babbit, Mitch McDeere, Jerry Maguire, Nathan Algren... are all clearly distinct characters.

Yeah I guess. The only one that stood out for me was Born on 4th of July. But, he is good at what he does. His films are usually must see.

When I think of actors that can’t act, I think of actors that simply show up and play themselves. This is the opposite of people like Streep and Daniel Day Lewis.
Among the most successful would be
Arnold
Julia Roberts
Robert DeNiro
Nicholas Cage
Jennifer Anniston
Honorable mention (which may be explained by typecasting choices) goes to
Vince Vaughn
Owen Wilson
Adam Sandler
Vin Diesel
Sylvester Stallone

Red River
The Searchers
The Quiet Man
You obviously don’t know a good actor when you see them

His size/muscles typecast him, but there were a few roles where he went outside the "huge hulking dude" and seemed ok.
Predator was more of a John Wayne 'tough guy' role, instead of what he did with Conan and Terminator. And True Lies, if he could only have lost that accent, he really would have been just the normal secret agent guy.

Try watching Jingle All The Way with the volume muted. I stumbled into that by accident this past Christmas and his utter lack of acting talent was on full display. But maybe the problem was the shitty direction or possibly a natural reaction for actors trying to distract an audience from a truly shitty script.

Jingle All the Way is a classic. Lol. Well, I liked it as a kid at any rate.
Has Eddie Redmayne been mentioned? He’s terrible.

Cage is a good actor. His decision making is hit or miss.

Totally agree with this. She must’ve moved in with Harvey for a while go get some of her parts.
She was good in silver linings playbook but I think anyone could’ve played it
