Tomorrow Never Dies just might be the most underrated Bond movie...

I feel like when this film came out in 1997, there was a lot of criticism about just how outlandish the plot was. For those of you who may not know, the film features Bond attempting to stop a crazed media mogul from starting a world war between China and the western powers for TV ratings. Fast forward almost 30 years, and it's absolutely hilarious just how relevant this film is.
Jonathan Pryce, clearly enjoying himself, chews up the scenery as the villainous Elliot Carver. Michelle Yeoh, in the prime of her physical beauty, plays the highly capable Wai Linn - a Chinese spy who, like Bond, is attempting to stop Carver. And let's not forget Teri Hatcher, whose career was just starting to get going on television (Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) and film (2 Days in the Valley), making an appearance as Paris Carver. And finally you have the always reliable Götz Otto playing Stamper - Carver's right hand man and main muscle man.
I also think the film's title track by Sheryl Crow is among the franchise's better songs but maybe it's just me.

Brosnan was a great Bond. Loved all his films

One of my favorite later Bond films actually. Loved Michelle Yeoh in this and thought Pryce made an interesting Rupert Murdoch. Stamper was great and Teri Hatcher was underused, but of course anytime you get a Vincent Schiavelli assassin scene you have to appreciate it.
While I liked the Sheryl Crow track I enjoyed the closing credits K D Lang a bit more. It was more Bond like in the Shirley Bassey vein and Lang can belt one out. Here's the opening credits with K D Lang's version.

Yea that’s a good one. Young Michelle Yeoh was good in it too.

Like always, Bond and the enemy he goes up against is a great reflection of the time the movie was made.
The evolution of the Cold War and technological advancements, the 24 hour news cycle emerging as Tomorrow Never Dies was released, Spectre and cyber etc.
I grew up with Pierce as my Bond.

“The Empire Will Strike Back” is a great newspaper headline that was in this movie in the villain's paper

Had been around for a while already.
CNN started 24 hour cable news in 1980.
FOX news in 1996.
Between them we had Gulf War 1, and a few other things.

Remember, the great Ricky Jay also had a role in this.

Who could ever think that a foreign born billionaire who dabbles in rocketry, owns a large media company and uses his wealth to influence American politics would be a bad thing….

Also, how absolutely dependent we had become on technology and how we would blindly follow it, even when it was wrong (and how nobody knew it was wrong), with the GPS that drew the Brit ship off course subplot.
You see a milder version of that today with people driving into water or off roads because their GPS told them to do it.

quote:Hilarious that they based the villain on Steve Jobs and Rupert Murdoch, then someone comes along to be a pastiche of that film pastiche.

It became the cool thing to shite on Pierce Brosnan. His Bond was awesome, and I enjoyed all the films.

and it starred the great Joe Don Baker - 1 of only 2 actors to ever play a major Bond Villain - and then a major Bond Ally.

Watched this movie recently and one quote stood out to me:
"Unlike the Americans, we choose not to get our news from CNN."
Bet that line will be scrubbed from any forthcoming re-releases.

They missed the boat on the weaponization of AI. As soon as I saw Dead Reckoning I thought this was a huge missed opportunity for Bond.

That's from goldeneye.
That lady was a really good M. Her and Bronsan were both great in all their movies.
