There’s chunks of good. Cutting out the casino scene would go a long way

It’s a decent movie. Popcorn flick if you will. But there are definitely a lot of things that should have been done better, or just not done at all. I still enjoy it. Not my favorite Star Wars movie, but not my least favorite either.

I feel like those scenes are the result of this movie being written backwards. Most stories are written first with the directors then coming up with visual effects that complement that story. This movie seemed like they started with cool ideas for visuals (Leia Poppins, hyperspace through Snoke’s ship, red guard fight, the salt planet battle, etc) and then tried to write the movie’s plot to connect the visuals. It resulted in a movie that frankly, doesn’t make much sense, with visuals that look cool while undermining the plot.

For example, the whole fight on the salt planet looked cool, but was absolutely pointless. Their weapons were so completely useless that they were defeated easily. They were better off not even trying, but it looked cool.

Truth is the Star Wars property had so much hype around it people were not going to be happy with even a "perfect" star wars movie. Everyone is too attached.

Which is odd, because almost every film in the franchise is flawed in some way. Empire is really the only "perfect" movie in the bunch. A New Hope will always be loved because it was the first, but even it has some glaring flaws.

Did Rian Johnson just phone it in and didn't help this whole thing? Sure maybe but it's surely not as bad as the backlash.

TLJ deserved every bit of backlash it has received.

It's a horrid movie at all levels, and that's before the blatant SJW crap.

I walked out of that theater shocked at how they managed to screw it so bad lmao.

Same experience. I saw it a couple of weeks after release and already knew what people were saying about it being bad. I can actually stand the prequels so I didn’t think TLJ could really be THAT bad. I was wrong. It was that bad.

Agreed. I think with some major cuts, editing, and maybe 20 minutes of additional footage, TLJ could go from a franchise killer to one of the best movies in the series. It’s like an old house with a bad paint job, weird furnishings, a tiny kitchen, and a non-sensical layout inside. However, move some non-load bearing partition walls around, pull up the old carpet, get some new paint, new counters, new appliances and boom, you’ve got something seriously valuable

What I think is strange is that the prequels and new trilogy are both flawed in polar opposite ways: prequels tell a good story with bad dialogue, terrible effects that look cheap, and wooden acting. The new trilogy tells a bad story with mostly good to great dialogue, stunning visuals, and damn good acting (outside of Hux).

I’m not saying it wasn’t bad. But if they would not have trashed Luke the way they did IMO it would have been an ok movie.

Absolutely not.

It starts off with one space ship dropping bombs on another. In space. I can live with their being some crazy, advanced tech that keeps atmosphere inside ships but allows other ships to pass through, but to completely remove gravity from space is going too far.

Then we have every male character being a fricking moron and needing to be saved by a female character. Every. fricking. One. If roles were reversed on that there would be feminists sky-screaming until their perms fell out. This even went to the point of bringing in a never-before introduced female office who valiantly goes down with her ship in a way normally afforded to only well-established characters.

Then we have the absolute waste of time that was the casino run. They spent ~20% of the movie's time having two characters go out on a mission that was actually useless other than to say "horse-racing is bad, rich people are bad and rich people who race horses are the worst".

Now we get to the Asian chick whose character and acting were both so horrible that I purposely refuse to find out either her or her character's names. I can only believe she won some sort of contest or saved the life of someone high up at Disney to get such a part in a Star Wars movie when she has acting skills that would make her questionable just to be a stand-in in a 7th grade Christmas play.

But wait, there's more! We have the utterly useless setup of Rey going into the cave with all the reflections that accomplished... nothing. It was a shorter and less preachy but it was just as big a waste of time as the casino run.

And then there's Luke. They could have used the wasted time spent on Spelunker Rey or Casino Bore-yal to give his change of attitude more depth, to help bring the audience along. Instead they rushed it, ham-fisting it into the story like a drunk with at half-mast trying to get into a hooker. It was ugly, messy and completely unsatisfying.

There's more but they are small annoyances compared to these glaring examples of true fricktardery in storytelling.

I haven't seen it since I left the theater in disgust in 2017 so I gave it a shot to rewatch it at home and I couldn't make it past the "prank call mom joke" in the opening scene.

It’s not great and it’s not terrible. It’s just okay.

Which is really the worst thing a Star Wars film can be.

I’m not even going to waste my money anymore. Used to be such a huge Star Wars fan. I just don’t care anymore.
