Does anyone else have this opinion? I’m not saying it wasn’t bad. But if they would not have trashed Luke the way they did IMO it would have been an ok movie. I have to admit I’m not a long time Star Wars fan. I recently got Disney+ and started watching them all as they were released. So in the last month or so I watched them all except for Solo and Rogue One. I was expecting TLJ to be terrible and was pleasantly surprised for it to only be bad..... and mainly for what it did to Luke.

Fake news as TLJ isn't even on Disney+ yet. Get this Disney plant out of here!

I tried watching it again recently. It's actually worse than many people make it out to be.

I didn't hate it, I just thought it was a boring film.

Maybe if they cut the 35 minute casino scene that’s pointless and didn’t grant Leia force power randomly it maybe could have been decent.

I walked out of that theater shocked at how they managed to screw it so bad lmao.

I did at first, because the film does a lot of important movie things right. The visuals are exceptional, the acting is largely excellent, the plot is anything but predictable, however, the more I thought about it and watched it, the less I enjoyed it. The plot is a mess, pacing is a disaster, and the film seems to disregard previous character development and plots begun in the previous movie. In addition, it greatly diminishes the cohesion and story of the original films.

It’s much worse than I expected. It’s essentially a franchise ruiner, and should have been scrapped before release or be retconned out of existence.

I like basically everything, even bad movies if they are entertaining.

TLJ was bad and not entertaining. It had really forced scenes that made no sense and felt disconnected to the story. I had a hard time finishing it.

This coming from a guy that watched the entire Green Lantern movie with Ryan Reynolds because I was bored the other night

I enjoyed most of it. Leia flying through the sky Luke's arc I didn't much care for, but I didn't lose my mind over those parts. It's just a movie, and for the 2 hours I was in the theater that day I was entertained.

I get a lot of the criticisms of it though.

Oh c'mon Leia Poppins was the highlight of the entire movie.

I have no idea if it is as bad as people are making it out to be. I have yet to see it. they lost me at TFA, it became painfully obvious the machine had taken over.

It was probably the worst thing story wise that could happen at that point. Imagine how much more interesting Kylo becomes if Leah dies there. Kylo can’t take the shot because there’s still good in him. He loves his mother deep down, but believes that he must defeat her to accomplish his destiny. He has the chance, but he can’t take the shot, he can’t do it, but she dies anyway. That sets him up for an extremely interesting journey through the light and dark sides of the force. Instead, we get Leah alive, but the actress dead, and conflict resolved. Leah Poppins was a sorta cool visual but bad story telling.

Pretty much how I felt.

Also it felt like the end of the trilogy. I mean there are only about 8 rebels left on the Falcon. What's the point of anymore movies.

All of this.

And that's before we even get into some of the all-time stupid moments like the opening prank call, the WWII bombing run in space, Leia in space, Laura Dern sacrificing herself to hyperdrive as if there wasn't a damn autopilot or droid capable, and some sort of weird salt planet trench warfare against Death Star tech.

I have this opinion and argued it for a year after release with people just reduced to calling me names and insulting me.

Truth is the Star Wars property had so much hype around it people were not going to be happy with even a "perfect" star wars movie. Everyone is too attached.

The easiest way to prove my point is the prequels when released were trashed as hard if not harder than the current trilogy. And now that we have new movies to trash, all of a sudden people are retconning their feelings about the prequels. It'll likely happen again when Disney tries a new Star Wars story as well.

Did Rian Johnson just phone it in and didn't help this whole thing? Sure maybe but it's surely not as bad as the backlash.
