The guy spent almost the entire movie trying to commit suicide. Let's all just sit with that for a moment and ask ourselves if this movie could be remade. I know we ask that about alot of movies but honestly, could this one be remade?

re: The Big Chill, think of it-- all those boomers in that movie (the characters AND the actors) are now retired and/or dying (William Hurt, literally)... no one else but Jeff Goldblum is really working much anymore.

I think Kevin Costner was actually in the coffin. Maybe not though.

Christian Slater spent the entire movie acting like Jack Nicholson.

I love the Hughes movies but Fast Times is a better snapshot of the time for gen x’ers.

A couple of honorable mentions:

Wall Street
Bright Lights Big City

Staples like others have mentioned.

Breakfast Club-could easily relate to the social dynamics of the time

Fast Times at Ridgemont High-The fun part of HS

The Last American Virgin

Valley Girl

Sixteen Candles

Less Than Zero

Porky's is what every HS kid hoped for in HS

Ferris Bueller Day's Off-always striving to skip school and return with the best adventure

But a few others I thought did well for framing the decade.

Risky Business
St Elmo's Fire
War Games
Say Anything

Top Gun was maybe the first movie post-Vietnam that gave a feel-good impression about military.

Picks from someone who was already an adult, who was contributing to both the U.S.'s official economy, and to the world's underground economy.

Blue Velvet-Nothing wrong with some weirdness.

A Fish Called Wanda-A very adult comedy.

Caddyshack Trading Places or Beverly Hills Cop-We all laughed at ourselves and each other. We did it often. We laughed about our differences, whether they were gender differences, economic levels, or racial/cultural differences. I found out I smelled like a dog when it rained. It was OK when a Black friend was late for something, to ask if they were on CP time.
