***SPOILERS***

quote:

So the shaman was in on it with the demon but can someone explain the exorcism? Was the shaman trying to kill the girl while the lady in white was trying to kill the demon? The whole I made a mistake conversation when he’s driving back confused me when taking the ending into consideration. Maybe i’m just overlooking something here very simple.

yeah I'm not 100% on this. it may be one of those "good for the ride but not really logical" parts of movie making or perhaps something involving Asian mythology that's beyond me. i always saw the Japanese man trying to transfer the curse/spell to the person in the truck, which is why it turns into a Zombie, but i'm not 100% on that

clearly the Shaman gave the Japanese man the heads up so he could protect himself, but I'm not 100% sure if the ritual was necessary for their plans. the movie deals with the concept of faith a lot and perhaps it was a test to see if the father would maintain faith (he didn't) to ensure when the real shite hits the fan, he won't. not sure what would have happened if the father didn't stop the ritual, though

i will also echo the questions earlier about the white lady telling him that he was cursed b/c he accused the wrong person (i may be misquoting). i completely don't get that, b/c the daughter was sick before he accused the Japanese man. there is probably something lost in translation/culture that i'm missing

quote:

Man that final cave scene was so well done and creepy. When he brings out the camera

i had the wailing on my queue for like 2 years and then i watched a what culture horror clip on youtube and they referenced how it had possibly the best manifestation of the devil in film, so i immediately put the movie on finally

I agree with most that it was a great, creepy horror movie. However, the fact that the police never acted like police really bothered me. They were a bunch of sniveling, crying running away cowards who acted like pussies for most of the movie. How do you not take creepy old jap to the police station with all of the pictures and other evidence showing that this dude is up to no good? Now ultimately it probably wouldn’t have made much of a difference, but come on.

i agree the biggest sin of this movie is how at some points it came off as a benny hill sketch, with how the police behaved

The zombie scene in particular and then it gets real serious again when they get to the rocks/cliff. Awesome shots by the way.

explain the exorcism?

I took it as the shaman trying to erase the protections the woman in white had placed on the family.

it was probably more like an anti-exorcism, in fact i believe he called it a "death hex". also there was an "exorcism" before the first family massacre. then theres the fishing metaphor: devil was a fisherman, shaman was bait, fish are the human souls to be caught.
shaman also wore the same loincloth the devil did in that eating wild animal scene/dream. i assume it was just parallel 'exorcisms' to confuse the viewer with the lady vs old jap, and the daughter vs shaman.

the 'made a mistake' convo was to get the cop to not trust the lady in white. so that when the dad went back to the house the protection herb stuff dried up and left them vulnerable becaues he didnt wait for 3 crows. so he fell for the bait and got caught by the demon.

I bookmarked this thread to remind myself to watch this movie.

I was just looking at the free streaming TV service Tubi and saw a category called "K-Drama +" and checked it out to see what it is.

And I noticed that Tubi has the movie for free.

Watched this last night for the first time and man, what an incredible movie. The director gives you just enough for 2+ hours and then drops that last 30 minutes.

Also, I dont think its mentioned in this thread, but the movie is just beautifully shot. One shot in particular that comes to mind is in the first 10-15 minutes, the police officer is talking to his daughter and they are sitting on the bank of the river and there is just this one shot of the village with the mountains in the distance and the river flowing through the town. The colors. The shot. Just gorgeous.

this was the movie that kicked off my dive into Korean cinema and 20-30 films later I continue to be really impressed with what they put out ..... ESPECIALLY contrasted with what hollyweird does

Tried watching this a little while back. For some reason, I just couldn't get into it and wound up bailing. Thought I might return to it to finish it out, but I just never could compel myself.

Adding it to my server to watch later. I'm usually not big into Asian movies at all. I'll give it a shot though.

I’ve had the same problem. SFP has talked about this movie before, and I’ve tried to get into it twice, and just couldn’t do it.

I didn’t notice.

In fairness, I feel like I always throw this movie on as kind of background noise, which is obviously dumb on my part.

Watched today based on this bumped thread. While horror isn't my favorite genre it was a really good movie all the way around. I was left me somewhat confused afterwards until I watched that explanation video. The older Japenses guy morphing into the devil with the camera was a great scene. This is pretty much as close to my vision of the devil as it gets.

ETA - As for my 25,000th post...the Devil made me do it!
