Finished a Sopranos rewatch after 15 years and was amazed at how well everything was tied together.

Watching it from an older perspective now, I noticed throughout the entire series there's an undertone show going on within the show itself.

But specifically I want to talk about the finale. Not from the standpoint IF he dies, but moreso about all the hidden references that lead up to his death at the end.

"Everything just goes black", and "you probably dont even hear when it happens"...

These concepts are mentioned throughout the series. The most recent prior to the finale is when Tony and Bobby are sitting in the boat.

But also there's a scene early in the series, maybe whe Tony's visiting colleges with Meadow that this is also brought up.

And the episode where Sil is in the restaurant, everything cuts to slow motion, and you see a blood splatter on Sil's face, followed a couple seconds later by the sound of the gunshot.

If Sil would have been the target, he'd be dead before even hearing the gunshot.

"Members Only" is the first episode in the last season, and in it the guys joke about Eugene's Members Only jacket.

Eugene is campaigning for Tony to let him move to Florida after getting his aunt's inheritance and Tony says no even after all the favors Eugene pulls for Tony.

As a result, Eugene's wife comments that someone should just put a bullet in Tony's head.

Then during the last episode, "Made in America" (a play on Members Only being an American brand?) the guy wearing a Members Only jacket, who resembles Eugene, is the one who walks in the bathroom.

The camera follows his path in the bathrooom and he isnt seen again before the cut to black, suggesting he was the one who put a bullet in Tony's head.

The first scene at beginning of the finale is Tony laying in what looks like a casket with the organ playing in the background (the beginning of "You keep me hanging on" by Vanilla Fudge) is another foreshadowing.

This is the same camera angle of Tony as is the "Members Only" scene when Junior shoots Tony.

At the beginning of Made In America, after Tony wakes up he goes into the kitchen and begins peeling and eating an orange. Oranges are infamous in The Godfather as a sign of imminent death and this is blantantly visible in the finale.

Meadow not being able to parallel park, having tried 3 times before she's successful, puts her getting into the diner late. 3 times to park to be successful, 3 attempts on Tony's life to be successful.

The Rule of Three's, which is mentioned earlier in the series, I believe by either Paulie or Christopher.

Because of this, she's not sitting in the booth, where had she been there she would be sitting next to Tony on the right The same angle that the Members Only guy is coming out of the restroom.

But because she's not there, she doesnt get in the middle of the bullet and Tony and she survives as a result. Because as Tony told Carmella earlier in the season, "Family members dont get touched".

The thing I'm unsure about, but is definitely some sort of sign, is what the orange cat signified in the last episode.

First staring at Christopher's picture all day. And then showing up to sit by Paulie outside the meat market after Tony leaves.

The meat market scene in the last episode is a direct callout and contrast to every other episode where a bunch of the guys are all hanging together.

In the last episode it's just Paulie and Tony. Tony trying to convince Paulie to take over Ralph's crew.

Paulie is hesistant at first because the head of that crew always ends up dead.

After some manipulation on Tony's part, Paulie accepts the offer, and immediately Tony leaves and the orange cat replaces Tony. The scene cuts out with just the cat and Paulie sitting together.

Was the cat signifying death as well (he was in fact orange), meaning Paulie setup his own death by accepting the offer.

Or was it to signify that after Tony is killed, Paulie and the cat are the only ones left.

There's so many undertones prevalent throughout the show even outside of the finale setup that I've come to appreciate the genius as to how that show was written and directed.

I've watched so many videos analyzing the last season and none of them brought up the rules of three or the fact that Tony looks like he's laying in a casket. This is brilliant and adds a new layer of subtext to the ending.

There’s a few theories about it. Some say it’s representative of the guilt of how Christopher was treated. Another one is there’s a wire placed behind/in the frame of the picture and the cat keeps looking at it because it can “hear” it.

The one I like is the cat is Adrianna.

Agree with the other comments. Your analysis is the best I've read. I always thought he lived and his suspicions of everyone in the diner, along with the cut to black, were symbolic that the rest of his life he'd live looking over his shoulder.

However, you've swayed me. Tony's gone.

Starting from Season 2 Tony and Paulie are visited many times throughout the series by the supernatural. Remember when Chris is shot, he tells Tony & Paulie he has a message for them from purgatory- 3:00

From this point forward these are the only two characters who have any interaction with the supernatural. Almost like Omens to change their behavior and save their souls from impending doom. This is especially true in the last season as Tony quite literally goes on a spiritual journey in his coma dream. He even recognizes this as a chance to start over anew, but with his personal turmoil and everything involving Phil and New York he pisses it all away. The moment he kills Chris and goes on his Peyote trip he accepts that his soul is beyond saving and thus ultimately at the end gets shot in the head at his 3 o’clock (the restroom at Holsten’s)

Paulie on the other hand is equally no saint and has done terrible things throughout the show. In the last season he is suffering from cancer AND abandons his mother after she tells him he was adopted. Paulie later gets a spiritual visit from the Virgin Mary. Unlike Tony he heeds the warning. He makes amends with his mom before she dies and miraculously ends up cancer free. Paulie still isn’t a saint, but makes changes for the better. In his final scene of the show he opens up to Tony about seeing the Virgin Mary, only for Tony to laugh at him. But ultimately Paulie is the lone survivor of the series, with no further threat to his being. For a show ultimately about people refusing to change their bad behavior, Paulie of all people heeds the warnings and makes a change in his life. Not bad for half a wise guy.

Patsy survives, and most likely was behind the hit on Tony as revenge for his twin brother Philly’s death.

Feels more likely than not that Paulie is the one who gave up Tony’s location for the hit to secure a promotion in the take over

Butch & New York went through with the plan of “decapitate and do business with whatever is left.” Paulie and Patsy I think we’re both clued in ahead of time. With Phil and Tony gone, it’s back to business as usual for. New York and New Jersey.

That's exactly what I think happened if I were pinned down to give my opinion. It's the most logical, to me.

The cat signifies Paulie is a rat who his hilariously ironic because the actor always said he would only take on the role as long as he didn’t end up a rat.

Also don’t forget Chris’s dream when he was shot and went to hell. The symbolism in the dream all ties back together.

Obviously this is an intense drama but I also see the show as an almost dark comedy with some of the crazy funny shite throughout

95% of viewers won't ever get that though, so even if the actor said that its probably not a huge deal to him that they put a somewhat vague reference in that he might be a rat.

When I think of a "rat" in terms of mob guys, I view it as working with the government. Paulie never did, nor would he ever cooperate with the FBI.

Paulie did tell Johnny Sac the fat joke made about Ginny Sac and cause the hellacious shite storm between the two families. He also told other shite to Johnny that caused less dollars to be in Tony's pocket and to gain favor with New York.

I view the two faced part of Paulie as him being a sociopath, like all the mob guys. Ultimately, they are in it for themselves and are trying to line their pockets. Paulie is selfish, but I never once viewed him as a rat, at least in terms of cooperating with the feds.

There was a theory that Paulie ratted Tony out to the New York family and had him killed.

I've thought on this the past few days and I see it now and agree. Came in specifically to post this.

Watch the scene when Tony first offers Paulie the position. Paulie is hesistant to give him a yes and asks for time to mull on it.

Tony specifically states it's life changing money to make everyone well aware that Paulie would normally take it immediately.

Just a few episodes prior he was shown clipping grocery coupons... that's how tight he was with money.

When Tony asks why he needs time to think it over, Paulie lies and says it's because he isnt a spring chicken anymore. It's not because of his age, he needs time to decide whether to stay loyal to Tony or give him up to New York.

So Tony gives him time to think.

And in their last scene together Paulie and Tony are talking about the cat again, and Tony says it's probably just a dead rat behind the wall that the cat had been staring at. But Paulie moved the picture and it still goes and stares in the new spot.

The dead rat is Chris. Even though he isnt shown actively involved in the FBI, he had made mentions to Adriana of killing Tony while he was pissed at him and Tony had killed him as a precaution becauae he was afraid his drug abuse would eventually make him a rat.

Tony's pushing Paulie to take over Ralph's crew and says he's thinking to give it to Patsy.

Right at this moment in the scene there's a car that drives by with no driver in it, a completely empty car that drives in front of the scene.

Immediately afterwards Paulie has a pissed off expression and in just a few seconds Paulie's facial expressions change from anger, to guilt, then to a fake smile he gives Tony and accepts the position.

Tony leaves and Paulie's face is back to guilt/despair. It's at this time he's made the decision to give up Tony to New York.

Recall that Paulie has always been very needy for people to hear his emotions and be friends. Paulie had no one else, no real family, they made this clear throughout the show. I believe Carmella was the one who said he looked so lonely.

Paulie turned to Johnny Sac when was in prison, stating multiple times that Johnny was the only one checking in on him and Tony never visited or called.

Paulie felt close to Johnny at this point and gave up Ralph to Johnny for making that remark about his wife. So he's already turned his back once on the crew because he wasnt getting that emotional support.

Then Paulie tried to show Tony the horse painting he had redone of Tony as a general as sort of a shrine to Tony, and Tony tears it off the wall and throws it in the dumpster.

Then while Paulie and Tony were on the boat, Tony was grilling Paulie on whether he told Johnny about the joke. Paulie was afraid for his life in that scene, and Tony seemed to play into this fear when he went to the back pretending to get a gun from the boat.

Now in this final scene, Paulie opens up his heart to Tony about seeing the Virgin Mary at the Bing. Tony starts making jokes about it which pisses off Paulie. Paulie tried to communicate his emotions to Tony as a friend but Tony blew it off and went back to business.

The Patsy thing followed, and at that moment Paulie chose to side with New York.

The cat immediately shows up and stares at Paulie, the new "rat" in the crew.

LINK

I want to go back and see who all Carmella told about the reataurant they were going to be at. Somehow word leaked.

Rat in the sense here is ratting out to the NY crew, not the police, which is a big difference.

I have watched this series 10x and never noticed the driverless car, nor have I read about it.

Good catch.

Down the rabbit hole of series ending opinions I go!

Paulie also had serious hesitation when Sil handed down preemptive hit orders on New York talking about how he narrowly escaped the Columbia wars.

Oh it’s 100% a comedy. Call it a dramedy. But Sopranos is hilarious.

If any of you haven’t listened to it there is an awesome podcast where Michael Imperioli and Steve Schripa discuss each episode and have many guests who were actors and other staff on the show. Other than Imperioli crying about Trump in one or two episodes it’s a great listen. They finished it a few years ago. Highly recommend. And then watch it again every 18-36 months like I do.
