Yes you do.

I'm out. I'll watch it one night when I can't sleep and it's free on Samsung live.

No. I was hoping he was since he has worked with Nolan so much.
I thought Nolan got mad that Hans went with Dune over Tenet and does not work with him anymore. I think Goransson is now Nolan's score guy.

I will give you that for Ellen Page. There's been no confirmation of the truth of that, but given that other wild rumors turned out to probably be true, it may be as well. I do not even know how to conceptualize it in my head, it is bizarre on paper to say the least. Without context, it seems like leftist stunt casting

But Ledger was universally despised casting at the time. I don't think you are remembering properly just how much vitriol was spewed about that. He was seen as a teenage heartthrob and it was absolutely clowned on

Lupita is a pretty woman and a good actress. This is a fantasy film. Obviously, like Page, this could be stunt casting but its not quite the same as Page.

The Travis Scott thing...yeah.

This is NOT me defending the film or casting, by the way. I haven't seen it.

There can be a nuanced discussion about casting and prejudging an entire film

I don't know, man, casting Lupita as the most beautiful woman in the world seems pretty dumb. She's a decent looking woman but I wouldn't launch a canoe down a drainage ditch to fight for her.

So cast her in the slave film, that’s believable.

This is stupid no matter how much you try to justify it. She is not and will never be Helen or Troy or anything remotely in the vicinity of her.

Comparing Ledger to her is insane

The Time article reeks of hubris and the moby dick mentality that has led to many big movie flops by prominent directors. Nolan said he's been chasing this whale for 20 years - since he was supposed to direct Troy previously.

The only saving grace might be that his wife/business partner and the studio might hold his most ridiculous ideas in check.

Again, not close to the same

Hans had enough interns to do both. Hans did great with Dune, so I’m glad it happened.

Tenet, Oppenheimer (Oscar win), Odyssey. He’s just coming off his third Oscar win for Sinners. I think he is the best choice for this movie given the choice to not use an orchestra for the score.

Because I can make an inference with available info.

I knew Scarlett Johansson’s casting as Major Kusanagi (a Japanese woman) was a stupid decision without seeing the live action Ghost in the Shell.

Can you not make a determination with the available facts?

I like how Damon says in that Time piece:

quote:

“He’s very faithful to Homer because that’s not somebody you rewrite.

Then like three paragraphs later is all the ways he rewrote it.

quote:

He has also studied the text and made several striking adaptation choices. Argos, Odysseus’ loyal dog, has been promoted from a cameo to a bit player. Odysseus and his son Telemachus (Tom Holland)—burdened by the legend of a father he doesn’t remember—are given more time together. Circe, an archetype in Homer’s version, gets a humanizing update thanks to Samantha Morton’s unsettling yet sympathetic performance. And the reunion between Odysseus’ fellow king Menelaus (Jon Bernthal) and his wife Helen (Lupita Nyong’o)—the most beautiful woman in the world, blamed for starting the war after a Trojan prince spirited her away—has always felt too neatly resolved in the poem. Nolan complicates it. And in a twist, Nyong’o also plays Helen’s sister, Clytemnestra, whose marriage to Menelaus’ brother Agamemnon (Benny Safdie) is, to put it mildly, acrimonious.

I mean he looks ridiculous but that isn’t going to keep people from seeing it.

I think a lot of people will scoff at the Helen casting and just not go. I’m not paying to expose my family to that or be lectured about equity

True.

Reasonable casting would have brought everyone on board, except for the weird fringes who are too small to matter.

His name and “The Odyssey” would have easily done that.

Now, the retarded casting will immediately result in wide swathes of people avoiding it.

It will still make money, but it’s a stupid self-inflicted wound.

I want to believe that Universal allowed Nolan to make Oppenheimer - a film with what is essentially an all-white cast - on the stipulation that his next film is ethnically diverse. It's probably not true but that's what I'm going to tell myself.

Haha whatever the reason his take on The Odyssey is certainly gonna be a different one. I think it could get weird.

Do yourself a favor and look at the Oscar best picture rules. It has become increasingly harder to be nominated for best picture without a "diverse" cast

If Oppenheimer can meet the diversity requirements to win Best Picture, any movie can.

The casting of this movie is atrocious. I'm sorry, but no movie casting freaking Zendaya, Mia Goth, and Travis Scott in a prominent role can ever be considered an "epic" or "instant classic." Christopher Nolan is also the most overrated director ever. He ain't shite compared to Spielberg, Scorcese, Coppola, Kubrick, Hitchcock etc.
