Yeah the first 15-20 minutes was just bad in my opinion. After sleeping on this movie for a night, I think it has fallen in my Nolan movie rankings. It just hasn't stuck with me like some of his others

I liked it a lot. The cyclops scene was so good. So many gorgeous shots, the action set pieces were paced to where every 20 minutes or so there’s something huge happening. I did love in particular how Nolan gave us early on what we think is the complete Troy scene, only to bring it back around in the 3rd act with the flashback sequence. The third act in particular is great and very, very satisfying. Idk what to say other than I had a great time and you know, god bless Cgris Nolan for making on location, practical effect film making in 2026.
Like the film or not, movies aren’t made like this these days. In a world where everything is filmed on green screen or has a blurry unfocused background because of the digital cameras, Nolan still makes real movies like they use to. Gotta give him that.
Matt Damon is great as Odysseus, Robert Pattinson will definitely be nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Tom Holland was okay.
I’m kinda over the culture war stuff but I’ll say this, no Lupita should not have been cast as Helen if Troy, but the character is in like 3 minutes of the movie. A glorified extra. It was barely there to ruin anything. Elliot Page is a weird…dude. But to be fair the whole ladyboy thing might be the most accurate thing about Ancient Greece in this movie. Tons of f@ggotz back then.
Anyway 8.5/10.

We saw it last night with a group of friends and just got home a while ago after closing down a bar.
There were 10 of us, and our composite rating was just over 8.
When I got home, I was curious, and Rotten Tomatoes is 95%, and the Popcorn meter is at 97%. IMDB is 8.3 with 95,000 ratings, and 75% are 8, 9 or 10.
I looked at the box office, and the estimates are $120 million domestic and over a quarter billion global.
Just with those numbers and our group's opinion and the audience reactions we saw and heard it seems like it is going to be a financial success, as well as an audience and critical success. That is the movie trinity.
I'll add my own thoughts when I am less tired and sober.

Very very very good movie.
The Lupita and Page castings were much ado about nothing. Both actually made complete sense in the film and one could argue that the page casting was actually kinda based.
The Travis Scott casting, which is 30 seconds, was extremely bad however. I didn’t love Leguizamo either.
Otherwise fantastic film. Nolan is so damn good at making something feel propulsive through editing and pace.
It’s a really good movie. Certainly one of his best. Not Opp but still very good.

100% agree that the last 30-45 min takes the movie from a good, straightforward adventure epic to a great film with a deeper meaning that ties everything together thematically in the end.
The whole film you keep hearing about Zeus’ law and how important it was back then to treat your neighbor with honor, hospitality, and respect. We see what happens throughout the film when this law isn’t followed, things break down. The final climactic example of this is the end flash back to the Trojan horse and Odysseus explaining that this was the ultimate betrayal and Zeus’ law and they butchered the people of Troy without honor but through trickery. They didn’t know they were coming, no bow was “twanged” to give them a heads up if you will, like Odysseus does throughout the film. He went against his morals to win the war and this is why all these bad things are happening to him on his way home because the gods aren’t pleased.
The way Nolan brought this theme around full circle to explain the first 2 hours of the movie was absolutely genius and something not even Homer did. I believe he would be proud.
All of this being said I don’t think the film is without criticism. I do think the modern accents were weird. The gods were under represented just like they were in Troy (The Illiad). And some of the acting performances were just average. Also, Matt Damon looked kinda goofy in the action sequences, especially shooting the bow at the end. I give it a 9/10.

I liked this a lot too. It’s such a huge theme in the book and if you were to tell it just like it’s written the audience would be going ok we get it, hospitality is important. Just wouldn’t translate all that well to modern times. He somehow pulled it off and made it a central theme but interesting enough that modern audiences would appreciate the theme. So good.

What a weekend. This is gonna make a shitload of money. In Sunday School this morning 1 person had seen it and almost everyone said they want to in the next week or two.

Reading this thread overall everyone seemed to say it was meh.
Saw it today and I would have to give it a overall 6/10.
It had the potential to be a all time great with the story but ultimately failed. It’s more like the hobbit and had potential of lord of the rings and that’s a disappointment. The beginning of the movie was just bad. So many things took you out of the immersion of the world.
This was always gonna make money with Nolan name attached.

This thread has me dumbfounded. It seems off kilter from reality. I feel like some of y’all went into it wanting it to be bad because it was pre-labeled as woke. Other than casting a trans character there wasn’t anything woke about it. So the first lesson is don’t call a movie woke until you know it’s woke. Otherwise when it ends up actually being good you have to grasp at straws to feel like you are scoring points against wokeness. It was a solid to fantastic movie and it’s hard to except anyone saying it was terrible.

Race swapping is one of the original “woke” sins tbh. But it didn’t really distract me from the story. Page’s voice definitely did.

I saw it this morning and solid is the right word.
As far as Nolan goes it was better than Tenet and Dunkirk to me. Everything else outclasses it

I agree. I don’t usually like race swapping but it didn’t really bother me here. And Page’s voice was awful.

Sorry, I wasn’t giving my personal opinion. I was giving a sliding scale that I think is legitimate. Personally I would put it higher than Solid. I’d say great. Not the best Nolan movie but up there.
