This movie is coming out Friday. I'm going to watch it because I'll gobble up anything from tolkien's universe, including the ROP on prime which was just a DEI advertisement, but this animation style is really not my cup of tea. What's the boards general thoughts on what to expect here

My expectations are very low. But I’m going to go see it. I’m hoping if it does well it will lead to a film treatment of the Silmarrilion.

It is based off of Appendix A of Lord of the Rings and features girl boss Helm's daughter who is not even named in the one sentence that mentions her so completely new material.

Pass.

It’s going to suck.
Just because they market it as Tolkien doesn’t mean it’s Tolkien. And there isn’t a writer in Hollywood more talented than Tolkien.

You’re part of the problem here.

That’s my understanding as well. I had no intention of spending money to see it, but my cousin wants me to take him. So, I guess I’ll have to.

I usually support animated films, but I’m going to wait until it’s streaming or free.

I expect for it to make money just because it's Tolkien, but it doesn't look very good. I got my hopes up when they released that one image, but I was knocked back down to earth when I saw the trailer.

It just looks like some generic anime bullshite, which I've never been into. Couple that with the huge stretch of elevating one character just because she's a girl and you have the typical woke Hollywood crap formula.

At this point, I really do think they are just shitting on everything white guys like, and that there is no actual intent to create good entertainment. If there was, you'd think they would come up with something good every once in a while, by accident if for no other reason.

I was willing to look past the animation style, but the story isn't doing it for me. Full on girl bossery for a character Tolkien himself didn't get around to even naming.

Helm Hammerhand? THAT is what I was hoping to see, a story of his legend being told. Not freaking Hera Sue: Warrior Princess of Rohan.

Hard pass.

This is NOT Tolkien.

starting to wonder if trying to build an LOTR verse without the rights to any of his actual books is going to work out.

Looks like some generic fantasy story they bolted LOTR lore on top of.

Honest question, is executive producer Peter Jackson part of the problem with this one? He called this movie "essential lore."

This might end up being girl boss crap, but Jackson being tied to it, Alan Lee was brought in to help with visuals, and Kamiyama has a good track record. I'm giving it a shot just based on those few things.

I was actually okay with it being animated and I was excited about it when it was first announced way back when. After seeing the trailers, that excitement has been tempered.

I am not opposed to girl power stories if they are well done and have strong male characters as well. In this day and age I have doubts that will it will be done well though.

quote:

I am weary of skulking in halls, and wish to face peril and battle. … am I not of the House of Eorl, a shieldmaiden … may I not now spend my life as I will? … All your words are but to say: you are a woman and your part is in the house. But when the men have died in battle and honour, you have leave to be burned in the house, for the men will need it no more. But I am of the House of Eorl and not a serving-woman. I can ride and wield blade, and I do not fear either pain or death. …[I fear] A cage, To stay behind bars, until use and old age accept them, and all chance of doing great deeds is gone beyond recall or desire.

quote:

Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!" A cold voice answered: 'Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye." A sword rang as it was drawn. "Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may." "Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!" Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. "But no living man am I!”

Peter Jackson made the Hobbit trilogy garbage. His opinion is now worthless.

Rankin Bass & Ralph Bakshi did animated Tolkien versions.

Isn’t she only mentioned in one sentence?
