re: The Last Samurai: An All-Time masterpiece

Tom coming into the throne room at the end and presenting Watanabe’s sword, the kid emperor suddenly growing balls, violating protocol and speaking up for the samurai, kicking the foreigners out...I just didn’t buy it.
Take Dances With Wolves, a similar film.
It’s like Costner showing up at the White House and presenting Ten Bears’ peace pipe to the president and the president then standing up to his military leaders and calling back settlers. It’s just cheesy, over the top drama. Instead, Costner just slips away into the wilderness, like the frontier did in history. You get an epitaph on the screen.
I think Samurai would have been much better with something similar.
Again, I like the movie and think it’s good. I just don’t think it’s great, perfect, or a masterpiece.

Tom Cruise as the Hollywood white savior who ends up being the spokesman for the Samurai's cause just weakens the entire film.
He doesn't save shite. The samurai are all wiped out.

Katsumoto is one of the GOAT movie characters.

Maybe he can play Joe Biden in a movie about the BLM cause then

thought it had a cheesy, oversentimental ending. Felt it would have been much better if they died on the battlefield from being gunned down.
But that’s, like, just my opinion
Holy shite at this comment. I haven’t watched the movie in years and I remember them getting killed at the end. They did the slow motion fall off the horses and the army knelt and I was like “cool, gotta make dinner” and then the movie kept going. I was like “what the hell is going on here?” I think it must have gone to commercial after that scene last time I watched it and I turned it off. I had ZERO idea that scene with the Emperor happened and now I can’t unsee it.

I like the movie but haven't seen it in years. Thanks for my evening plans.

I agree. It’s incredible, top to bottom.

The Outsiders, All The Right Moves, Born On The 4th Of July, Jerry Maguire, Collateral, and Edge Of Tomorrow are better.

Japan of that time was going through significant changes including unprecedented adoption of many things western. To that end, Cruise’s character and the other American advisors were held in very high stead by the Emperor. Thus, Algren was in a unique position to make an impact on the emperor, especially after having spent much time with the Emperor’s former mentor, Katsumodo, and alongside him during his final moments on the battle field.
Costner, a disgraced deserter who went native,
turning savage Indian, would indeed have been ridiculous trying to gain favor with the US President in that scenario.
Not to mention, Algren represented a people that were still highly respected by the Emperor, whereas Costner clearly did not.
So that is such an abysmal and flawed comparison that it calls into question your own perception and judgment.

The more I think about it, from top to bottom, this may be Cruise's best movie
Agree for the reasons you listed. Also one of Cruise's most beautiful leading ladies.
And Billy Connolly's work worth the price of admission...
...personally shitkick every Far Eastern buttock that appears before my eyes.

The Score is GOAT tier
One of Zimmer's best.
I think the problem I had with the movie is the fact that Cruise kept surviving and coming back and surviving some more. Bastard should've died multiple times.

That’s cool.
Tom strolls into the Emperor’s throne room carrying a samurai sword. The Emperor’s army just waged a war and slaughtered them. Tom says if you believe me to be your enemy, command me, and I will gladly take my life. Tom’s words spur the Meiji Emperor to rise, realize his error, and cancel the treaty.
Perhaps you bought that and think it’s awesome that Tom teaches the Japanese Emperor a thing or two about cultural appreciation. I found it to be unbelievable and somewhat silly.

2nd best behind Tropic Thunder.
But we’ll see what top gun 2 has to say about that.

Love Last Samurai, but Edge of Tomorrow is my favorite Cruise movie. Surprised this is the first and only mention of it so far.

Maybe you should stick to reality TV.

We must have watched two different films if this is your take.

Wrong. In fact, wrong at least 4 times in one sentence. Impressive.

I don’t really watch reality tv.
