You don’t think Tom’s actions caused the Emperor to change his mind, rise, speak, revoke the treaty, while specifically mentioning the old ways?

You think he was going to do that anyway, without Tom showing up?

Tom strolls into the Emperor’s throne room carrying a samurai sword. The Emperor’s army just waged a war and slaughtered them. Tom says if you believe me to be your enemy, command me, and I will gladly take my life. Tom’s words spur the Meiji Emperor to rise, realize his error, and cancel the treaty.

Perhaps you bought that and think it’s awesome that Tom teaches the Japanese Emperor a thing or two about cultural appreciation. I found it to be unbelievable and somewhat silly.

I agree with this. Very good movie, but its flawed in the 3rd act.

Regarding his other movies mentioned, I always thought that Vanilla Sky was under-rated. It’s so depressing which makes it not very re-watchable, but damn, what a reveal!

LINK

Here’s a handy link to compare/contrast your idiotic review with the actual scene.

What is that, the throne room scene?

What do you think is different from what I said?

It’s funny that you’re getting so upset at this.

Vanilla Sky

Yes...leaves you with some strange feelings in the second half of the film, but I honestly think it would have been a little better without Cruise involved. Like said earlier, he was really striving to hit some Academy material there from 99-2004 (Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, Minority Report, Last Samurai, Collateral, Vanilla Sky), but he just wouldn't get the nod. He's always Tom Cruise; maybe he gets a John Wayne-True Grit award some day, I don't know.

Was he really a savior though?

Actually, it was the samurai who saved him. He was heading toward his own demise on a steam engine with no brakes. They pulled him off and he found a purpose again.

Incredible movie. One of my alltime favorites.

I believe the idea was very roughly based off the novel Shogun written by James Clavell which was itself roughly based off William Adams, the first Englishman to reach Japan and the first non-Japanese Samurai.

"I will tell you how he lived" always chokes me up a bit.

A lot of good Tom Cruise movies. But "Last Samurai" is my 1A and "Eyes Wide Shut" is my 1B.

I’m shocked that you have such a pathetic, effete, nihilistic take just because it involves a white person. Absolutely shocked. Just shocked. Jesus, dude. You’re a parody at this point. Are you a vegan by any chance?
