The more I think about it, from top to bottom, this may be Cruise's best movie

The Score is GOAT tier
The cinematography is amazing
The fighting choreography is top notch
The story is incredible
The acting is Oscar worthy across the board

This is close to a perfect movie

I'm not going argue that as a possibility - both are incredible movies and it comes down to a matter of taste really

Just everything about The Last Samurai was so well done

This could be a testament to Cruise's ability to make a movie - that span from 2002 to 2004 has Savant level Cruise movies

It is a great movie. Obviously because he's the lead and all over the promotional pieces people understandably think that Tom Cruise's character is supposed to be the Last Samurai. But he's not, Ken Watanbe is the Last Samurai trying to preserve their old ways.

Love the movie.

As others have mentioned, collateral is really great too. It's a Toss-up for me.

Allegedly, Cruise was bummed out for not winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Magnolia (1999). He took a reduced salary for that movie and he honestly thought he couldn’t do any better acting than that, so that was his best chance to win.

But he didn’t really become “I’m doing M:I movies until I die” Tom Cruise until Ghost Protocol in 2011.

So, you get a Best both worlds Tom Cruise in the 2000-2010 period of action and quality acting.

Minority Report
The Last Samurai
Collateral

I can't see this title without thinking about the Chappelle skit with Paul Mooney.

Would be the same as a movie called "The Last Ni**a on Earth" starring Tom Hanks

I don't know about perfect, but it's so good. It has aged well too.

Last Samurai, Collateral, and Minority Report are all up there for Tom Cruise.

I liked the movie, but...

I thought it had a cheesy, oversentimental ending. Felt it would have been much better if they died on the battlefield from being gunned down.

But that’s, like, just my opinion.

This.

Tom Cruise as the Hollywood white savior who ends up being the spokesman for the Samurai's cause just weakens the entire film.

Was he really a savior though?

At the end of the film the entire Samurai army was wiped out. And it's pretty apparent that the Samurai way of life disappeared

And he was the spokesman because they were all dead

Good points. I think that guy was trying to flame the thread for some reason, I don't see where race factored into the movie or the OP at all
