The appeal used to be late night shows were about the only place you could see celebrity interviews. Now we’re over saturated with celebrities and they’re all over the place. Plus we learned that the less we hear of actors from our favorite movies the better.

Also the new celebrities for the younger generation aren't actors. They are YouTubers.

it's official the era of the late night talk show is over

I think I've found the problem. If Colbert is the "best of the bunch," then someone has failed miserably.

I think there is still a spot for late night talk shows, but networks have to dial back the expectations (and the costs). And ESPECIALLY the politics. Just put someone funny and likable at the forefront and let them be normal. Doesn't have to be someone like Colbert who is consumed with political idiocy, or Fallon who is the fakest person ever and fawns all over every person on his show. Just make them normal and accessible to America, and people will tune in. Just not in droves like they used to because there are now a hundred more avenues for people to consume that kind of entertainment and content. The paradigm shifted a while back, so stop trying to desperately hold onto something that ran its course a decade or two ago. So understand where you stand and cater to that.

Many many moons ago in the 80’s, I remember our whole dorm gathering in the lobby to watch Letterman. Good times

It’s been going downhill ever since.

This.

Yep. I used to watch Letterman religiously. Always funny and the music acts were good too.

Explain the popularity of Gutfeld then.

Are you serious? You really think Gutfield is the same type of show as CBS/NBC/ABC late night shows? Yo think Gutfield has some large viewership numbers for people under 50?

The time is now ripe for them to bring back "The Chevy Chase Show."

It’s impressive that any of the late night format shows lasted this long.

My parents love Gutfield. Every time I watch it it’s so cringe.

Not supported by the demographic data posted in this thread but you go on and hoist that self validation.

The production cost was insane. I read he had around 200 staffers, including like 20 writers.

I think the roles he played on the Daily Show and his own show on Comedy Central needed great writing - and it had it. That kind of staff (especially the writing), and his enormous salary on his present show just couldn't be sustained for the long haul.

Plus, people are just tired of the silliness of the extreme left - and he pushed it. Kimmel does the same thing, I'll be surprised if he last as well. It's ok to have opinions, but why offend or belittle those who don't agree with you and risk losing viewership (that determines you and your staff's pay)?

BTW, I think The Tonight Show is fine. Fallon has views, but doesn't offend - and seems to have fun. Remember how mad folks were that he "humanized" Trump?

I legit have no idea who Gutfeld is.

Is he political?

Yeah, but he leans into the crazy side of the left, the part that everyone is tired of. He is NOT a Christian conservative at all - and throws out beeped F-bombs, penis jokes, and is for legalized weed. He's pretty damn funny if you are into making fun of the absolute wackiness of the extreme left.

Dude was the editor of Stuff (and my favorite) Maxim and in his reign it was the best men's mag on the planet. Back then, if you wanted to read all kinds of manly guy stuff, with hot babes on every page, you get a subscription.

I didn’t either till this thread.

But after Googling him, yes.

And he has the same pattern that only an extreme minority of a valued demographic watches him. So you can’t point TDS as the reason for the others.
