Yep, same here. I've seen better movies, but the BEST experiences are obviously when the theatre experience was elevated and movie screens, sound systems, etc all got huge.

Predator… last movie I ever paid to see in the theater. A very underrated movie.

1A Saw The Bridge over the River Kwai at a drive in theater with the family in the 60's. My brothers and I were all whistling The Colonel Bogey March scene from TBORK (on YouTube) afterwards.
Somebody had written lyrics to it, for a song about Comet cleaner. When the movie started, we sang that until our parents made us stop.
Comet Tastes like Vomit song (on YouTube) Be sure to teach this one to your kids!
The Comet song was banned at school.
The lyrics to the original song are about WWII (on Lyris on Demand)
quote:
Hitler Has Only Got One Ball Lyrics
Hitler, he only had one ball,
Goering, he had two but very small,
Himmler had something simmler,
But poor old Goebbels had no balls at all.
Whistle Chorus:
Frankfurt has only one beer hall,
Stuttgart, die München all on call,
Munich, vee lift our tunich,
To show vee 'Cherman' have no balls at all.
Whistle Chorus:
Hans Otto is very short, not tall,
And blotto, for drinking Singhai and Skol.
A 'Cherman', unlike Bruce Erwin,
Because Hans Otto has no balls at all.
Whistle Chorus:
Hitler has only got one ball,
The other is in the Albert Hall.
His mother, the dirty bugger,
Cut it off when he was small.
Whistle Chorus:
Apparently, Allied POW's whistled the Hitler has only got one ball tune as an insult to their captors.

1B would be seeing the 1938 The Adventures of Robin Hood at the drive-in. After seeing that, we sword fought with sticks until we hurt each other. Not long after seeing it, my mom had to be gone for a couple of days. My dad grilled some pork chops, and let us eat them with our hands like they did on the Robin Hood movie. There was no such thing as Scarborough Fair, where you get turkey legs, back then. I'm sure that's where they got the idea of eating that way.

The Last Crusade.
9 year old me was blown away. I didn’t get to see the previous two in the theaters.
Only the penitent man shall pass.

I got a handy from a chick in a movie theater once, that was pretty cool.

. Shut the front door! I was going to post this exact memory! I was four and we sat in the theater and watched it twice. The opening Hoth scenes were absolutely masterful. The final battle with Luke where even as a kid I realized Vader was just toying with Luke. It was completely opposite of New Hope because it began and ended so bleakly for the Rebellion.
those who didn't experience this firsthand don't understand what a seminal event this was at the time.
nothing since that compares. there was such a huge buzz after star wars came out that lasted for years culimating in Empire.

In college at LSU, me and a buddy got really stoned and went to see War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise. For whatever reason, it was just the right weed hitting at the right time or something, but we were just blown away by that movie experience. It was surreal. That scene when they are in the basement with Tim Robbins and the alien looking for them was so intense.
Close second would also be in college, my freshman or sophmore year at LSU, the big theater on the side of I-12 past Millerville road was showing a pre-screening of Knocked Up before it came out. It was just for LSU students and was either free or very cheap. I've never laughed so hard in a movie. That was one of the first of the new Apatow-style comedies and everyone was blown away.

Im not a big movie guy, but my brother and I seeing Ghostbusters Afterlife in theaters together. I was too young for 1 and 2, but because of him I loved Ghostbusters (still do). We waited and waited for a sequel to 2 (rumors for more than a decade). When afterlife came out we went that night and it was a blast.

My grandpa took me to see Battle Los Angeles when I was 11. Terrible movie but it was awesome to see a big-budget action movie in a theater just me and him. He complained and joked until the day he died about the “hearing loss” he suffered from how loud movies had become
I don’t think he’d seen a movie in the cinema for a long time before that and it was the last one he ever went to.

quote:I didn't see the original Star Wars until a re-release just before Empire came out. I was in college, and must have thought it was a kid's movie. I was the youngest of three boys, and always living "older" than my age. Even though Speed Racer came out in the US when I was eight yr's old, I never watched it, because I thought it was for kids. Until they showed it on MTV in the 90's, I'd never seen any of it.

I watched the first SW's movie at least three times when they re-released it, so it was fresh on my mind. I didn't wait in line all day, but it was probably the most excited I'd been over seeing a new movie.

Star Wars in 1977 in the old Cortana Mall cinema (I think it had 3 screens). I was 8, went to see it with an older neighbor (12 yr old girl that watched me). My mom dropped us off. And before the comments- no, there was no NSFW action
Like other kids, the Star Wars commercials had me excited, but SF/fantasy movies back then were invariably cheaply made. I guess we all were conditioned to hope it looked half as good as a Harryhausen movie, like Sinbad or similar. Maybe if we were lucky, it could be as good as a Star Trek or Space 1999 episode, or maybe something from a Bond movie. Little me didn't care, my imagination always filled in the missing details.
So, expecting that, and walking into what Star Wars actually was- my GOD.
There really is no way to express just how magical that movie was, in the context of what other movies gave us at the time.

granted any star wars for an Xer is formative, but Terminator '84 left so many loose-ends.
That said T-2, in a theater in '91, blew me away.
The pre-release teaser was T-1000 flowing thru the psyche-ward cell bars, then "clink", rotate pistol.
A single casting choice kept it from being 100% perfect.

Got to go with Fellowship of the Ring. I had read the Hobbit before seeing it, but I had no idea Lord of the Rings was a trilogy. The prologue just blew my face off. It was the first movie where I was actively asking myself “How the hell did they do that?” I remember the zip line shot from Amon Hen and just wondering how they pulled that off. Fortunately the extended editions really went into detail about then.
Then at the end I just assumed Mount Doom was across the river and wondering how the hell they were going to wrap this up in a few minutes. When they get across the river and we see Mordor from a distance, I was a bit confused, and then it just ends. I’m pissed for half a second and then realize it’s a trilogy and get thrilled again. One hell of a movie experience.

In no particular order . . .
Jaws - Was but a wee lad but still remember Quint’s brutal death scene.
Star Wars - again, was but a wee lad but still remember Luke swinging across with Leia and then Ben/Vader fighting with laser swords.
Evil Dead II - The funniest movie I’ve ever seen in a movie theatre. My date said she had a great time just watching me laugh.
Jurassic Park - Best visuals ever (up to that point) - when the raptor jumped for the girl (as she was trying to escape into the ceiling), the whole theatre went crazy.
Independence Day - It was just so . . . Yeah. The whole crowd was into it - at the right times too.

First Avengers movie. Senior in HS and we just finished up our baseball season. Went with some buddies after our last game. Was floored at how realistic the Hulk looked bc if your remember they did not show a lot of the Hulk in the trailers.

The 1st jurassic park movie. I worked at the Holiday Cinema in Covington as an asst manager. We had to set up the movies on Thursday night for the opening on Fridays. You run them through to make sure it works and no issues.
We could have some friends come watch the movies with us, since we were going to be there late
I hardly knew anything about JP other than it was Spielberg and Dinosaurs.
The movie blew us away. Loved the fact that I managed not to see anything about the movie and went in cold.

1st Dolby movie I saw was Top Gun in the movie theatre in 1986 a week before I went to bootcamp. I felt like this guy. I've been chasing that high ever since.
ETA: 2nd would be the outdoor movie theatre on the windward side of Oahu. I missed the plot of several movies back in the day.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - 7 years old. Cinema 11 at Bon Marche.
To this day, I might have seen the movie over a hundred times and I still am not tired of watching it. Everything about that movie was perfect.
