Urban still kicks arse.
Agreed.

You could make it work.
It cost 50 million to make and made 41 million at the box office. Not saying it was a bad movie because it wasn't, but it bombed, they weren't making another one.

oh frick no, this is a horrible move.

I can’t think of a worse person for a Dredd movie
The last was maybe one of the most underrated movies of the last 15 years or so.

Are you guys referring to the movie that was made 13 years ago??? Because I feel like there’s zero chance to maintain any short of cohesion with such a long gap.
Not sure what you mean exactly. There wasnt really much world building in Dredd so there isnt much cohesion to lose imo. Really I think most fans just want Karl Urban to star and Garland to write because they've earned their trust with the material. Thirlby's inclusion would be nice as well.

The campy humor isn’t rewatchable and is stale at this point.
It doesn’t work with Dredd at all.
How many of you have actually read any Judge Dredd comics?
The comics aren’t really as dark as shown in the excellent, and superior, “Dredd” film of 2012.
While the Stallone film of 1995, is not as good, it is fairly close to what a Judge Dredd story might be. They messed up with Stallone taking the helmet off and Schneider being a sidekick, but it was more comics accurate than “Dredd.”.

Its going to be called Dragg and star a trans minority cop struggling to work they/them/their way up the ranks in a white hetero dystopian hellscape

My point is “no originality”. Absolutely sad. Hell, AI can create an original story. Not Hollywood

Get ready for Dredd to be emasculated and turned into a clown.

I wish more people would have gone to see Dredd because it was fricking awesome. Not enough people saw it. That’s why this is happening. :(

Garland has spoken publicly about this, and his definition of shadow directed doesn't seem to align with the common use of the phrase. He says he's shadow directed some films he's written, and he's also complimented the work of the credited director and defended his reputation.
He's also said, years ago, that he's not ever returning to Judge Dredd.

Currently a studio hasn’t picked it up yet to distribute. Whoever does win the bidding war should insist that they change directors.
Mr. “I’ll ruin your mythos in a minute, baby“ is having diminishing returns. He should stick to What we do in the Shadows type stuff for television and stay the hell away from the big screen.

From Grok:
quote:
Profitable: Jojo Rabbit (highly profitable due to low budget and strong gross), Thor: Love and Thunder (profitable but less efficient due to high budget).
- Not Profitable: Next Goal Wins (underperformed significantly against estimated budget).
- Context on Waititi’s Recent Performance: The mixed reception of Thor: Love and Thunder and Next Goal Wins has fueled sentiment that Waititi’s “magic” may be waning, with some fans and critics on platforms like Reddit and X pointing to these films as evidence of overreliance on quirky humor. This could influence studio confidence in his Judge Dredd project, though Jojo Rabbit’s success shows his ability to deliver profitable, acclaimed films when budgets are controlled.
### Relevance to Judge Dredd
The profitability of Waititi’s recent films suggests studios might be cautious. Jojo Rabbit’s success supports his ability to handle character-driven, satirical material, which could align with Judge Dredd’s dark humor. However, Next Goal Wins’ failure and Thor: Love and Thunder’s mixed results might prompt a studio to push for a director with a stronger recent track record in high-stakes action or sci-fi, especially given Dredd (2012)’s cult status but box office underperformance ($41.5 million vs. $45 million budget). A studio might condition involvement on a director change if they doubt Waititi’s ability to balance the project’s tone and budget, though his name and vision remain strong selling points, reducing the likelihood to ~20-30% as previously estimated.

That’s fine. But deciding to make a reboot of a movie that flopped alienating the cult following by having the writer of Iron Man 3 and the director of Love and Thunder may not be the best course of action either. Just saying.

It is also meant to be a fun sci-fi blockbuster that nonetheless speaks to this moment in culture. The desire is to see the movie launch a Dredd universe that could be explored with additional movies and shows across various platforms.
Why? Why can't they just make another awesome sci-fi action flick?
It doesn't need to "speak" to anything. And there doesn't need to be any focus on more movies before a single shot has been filmed. Worry about that shite if this doesn't suck.

There is Dredd dark humor and Waititi’s slapstick awkward humor.

To be clear, I am in no way defending these hires. I think this is an awful idea.

It's stupid, but this seems to be how you get even a modest budget commitment from a studio for a lesser known comic or sci-fi IP, and that's been true awhile now.
It was true in the early 2010s. Dredd was meant to be the first film in a multi-platform franchise. A show set in the dystopian city was in active development alongside the movie, and it was obviously scrapped when the movie failed, even though the movie was good.
