Depends. Sometimes “Critics” seem to fall all over themselves for movies directed at “modern audiences “ which spells bad new for folks just looking for a little escapism. When a movie comes out and the critics score is in the 80s-90s I get nervous

Honestly, I think the creators, critics and audience need to lower their standards a bit. They need a strong reality check.
These are characters and stories designed for children with broad strokes, bold colors, plot holes galore and power scaling to meet the villain of the week.
The good guys get their arse kicked for 3/4 of the time and win in the last quarter through the power righteousness.
Can they be uncharacteristically deep from time to time? Of course. But they were meant to be easily consumed and discarded media.
Just make a fun film. Throw in the boobs, the jokes, explosions and a simple 3 act story and call it done.
frick the critics. Make something fun and release it in the summer. Don't try to make a 2D character 3D deep. No one really wants that. We want good to struggle and overcome evil, We might say we do, but a superhero movie is just that...a hero movie. They are good and right because they are the hero and not the villain.
Save the moral ambiguity for a Tyler Sheridan drama. Give me a reason to spend two hours of my day and $20 on popcorn and soda.
We'll all be happy.

The review embargo was lifted like one HOUR before the movie was available to the public. That's unusual. But normally these established media critics glaze - as the kids say - these sorts of reviews so they keep getting asked back for select reviews and to gain favor from the studios. When the access media are trashing your SuperGIRL movie, it's not good.

That X post said the same person wrote Teen Titans. If that's the one I'm thinking about it was pretty good for a couple of seasons. I don't know or care about canon so I'm not sure how it fit in but I enjoyed it before it degraded.

Based on how this movie is being described (Space Western, Mad Max, etc.) I think I may actually like this movie (unlike the new Superman)

I try to give movies a chance and it does mean I end up seeing some movies I did not like (Thor: Love and Thunder), but also movies I end up being pleasantly surprised by (Fantastic Four: First Steps).
That said, I think WB is making the exact same mistake it was making with Justice League... racing too fast to make an expanded universe.
Supergirl is a good character, but she's still got the same powers as Superman.
Contrast that with our introduction to the MCU:
Iron Man - Brilliant inventor creates a suit of armor filled with amazing weapons and gadgets
The Incredible Hulk - Gamma-powered rage monster
Captain America - Acrobatic super soldier
Thor - Norse god who controls thunder and lightning along with a magic hammer and superhuman strength
Aside from all of them being stronger than normal people (but by HUGELY varying degrees), each character is not only different personality wise but also incredibly different powersets.
I get not wanting to do Batman as we have a second Batman movie coming out with Robert Patterson that's not part of an expanded universe, and maybe not Green Lantern with the new series being made, but there are a TON of great characters DC could still establish in route to a new Justice League:
Martian Manhunter (GREAT power set, would make an amazing movie)
Firestorm (another highly unique power set)
Flash (a classic for a reason)
Wonder Woman (powerset is similar enough to Superman that you want to give it time to breathe first)
Zatanna (fun, sexy, and magic - magic is always the wild card for powers)
Cyborg (their equivalent to Iron Man, with a huge variety of gadgets)
Batman, because of the Robert Pattinson movies, is the wild card - you kind of need him, but it'd be hard to have him.
I'd space each of those out by 2 years, slowly build things up. Maybe some specials to hint at the characters, but not the SHOTGUN BLAST TO THE FACE that is Disney's approach.

To be fair, Krypto probably works best AS an animated movie.
That said, Krypto feels... pandering to me, in a way. I love animals myself, and I thought he was kind of fun in the Superman movie. Injecting him into every project seems like a reaction to test screenings where everyone said Krypto was their favorite part or something.

Gunn is going to flame out pretty hard at dc. Hes spread too thin and terrible at approving scripts.

I apologize in advance for this take. Something always hangs me up on SuperGirl. It seems her character always has pierced ears. How do they do that? Is there a special Kryptonite ear piercer? Seems like a lot of trouble.
