Why would the Rebels necessarily take over the government? They just toppled it's leader thousands of light years from the Capital. Surely someone could have stepped in. The Rebels may have continued to fight their way across the Galaxy and been fine when an actual Republic took the Empire's place. Now it's just a series of Imperials running the Empire and then Snoke takes over. I don't see why this is implausible.
It's plausible, I suppose, but there didn't seem to be a valid explanation as to why the Rebels failed to seize the government.

I don't think we could disagree more on Driver and Kylo as a character.
I thought he was awesome, and I loved having a big bad in progress.
We got Vader fully formed in new hope, and it makes for a great vilian in 1 movie, but the only way to move him anywhere is to walk him back from the dark. I see so much potential to take the kylo character in the other direction, to the depths of the darkside over two more movies as he grows with our protagonist in power and depth.
Everything they did with Ren was probably my favorite aspect of the movie.

I agree I can't wait to see how powerful they both become. I hope the both overtake Luke, Anakin, Palaptine and Yoda in terms of raw power.
Was it just me or was Kylo, despite not being trained fully, still really powerful with the force?

I am wondering what they do with Finn. I actually thought he was my favorite character

So lets rank them:
1) The Empire Strikes Back
2) The Force Awakens
3) Star Wars
4) Return of the Jedi
5) Revenge of the Sith
6) The Phantom Menace
7) Attack of the Clones

He is powerful with the force but his mind does not match his abilities.

He's reckless and not properly trained, hence his lightsaber, but he clearly has raw power.

Extremely powerful. He stopped a laser mid shot and held it in place. He could extract information from people's minds(powerful minds too). I'm looking forward to what powers Rian gives him in 8 and 9

well you know thinking about it know, it could be as simple as relating it to the rise of the Nazis in Germany.
The Republic was amazing for most, but some still felt hatred toward them and supported the Empire, started small then became large enough to face the Republic.

They can take him in any direction. I can see either him or Poe co-piloting with Chewie. But I think I would rather Finn train to be a Jedi. Then later have Snoke abandon Kylo for Rey and turn her to the dark side.
Have a 3-way lightsaber fight between Finn, Kylo and Rey, all fighting for different things. But eventually Rey coming back to the light at the end.

What is this Clone Wars you speak of?

This is the kind of shite I'm talking about that frustrates me with the prequels. We don't learn or see a single new thing about the Force in the prequels, save for bacteria of course. Nothing creative is done with it. Yeah, they can jump higher now, but all the Jedi and Sith do in the prequels is swing their lightsabers, push each other around a bit, and occasionally shoot lightning at each other, all of which we saw in the original trilogy. Lucas was clearly stale and had no creativity when it came to this.
I really hope at the end of Episode IX Kylo and Rey become so powerful that the lightsaber itself will become pointless as they duel one another. As this movie shows, a Force user should have all matter and energy at his or her disposal, which full mastery of it should make a lightsaber pointless.

The scene where Rey and Finn escape from Jakku on the Falcon was magnificent. That is one of my favorite action sequences ever.

quote:The republic had basically NO army until the clones... that was the whole point of Ep 2. Then it became the Empire... and once that was gone, you had a void... the old empire = First Order... The Rebels = Resistance... The "new" Republic... those nations trying to reform a legit UN type government.
No they don't. Not at all. What you said doesn't make sense.

Perfect but I'd flip 6 and 7.

Pointless clones vs pointless droids. Aside from the Jedi and the administrators of the Trade Federation, I can't think of any victims or casualties that are shown in the war. Therefore the war is entirely pointless.

It was pretty good. Still digesting it, however. I have a few questions I need answered before I can truly appreciate it

The resistance is sponsered by the Repubkic and the First Order is the Empire. What does that mean? is it like two countries? Is the war still going on? What?
The military and governors supported the emperor, when Emperor/Vader die, they aren't going to be like "Oh ya we will support the Republic/Senate"so they formed the successor to the Empire, 'First Order'. The First Order Will always view everyone as " The rebel alliance" or "resistance"
The rebel alliance tries to restore the Republic but they still rely on the rebel alliance for military support as there is no existing infrastructure
Additionally, they didn't talk much about the new republic so maintaining the Rebel Alliance name may have been an attempt to help the viewer know who they were

I didn't like 3P0 still. Never have. And I think they could have done R2D2 better. Sleeping beauty until just the right moment? Really?
I think Luke controlled that whole bit. And possibly helped Rey if she's his daughter.
