Did a rewatch of Speed. What a great movie. The characters on the bus, the Tuneman in the car, all lend themselves well to the story. The city of L.A. and the public transportation becomes a character in itself.
The only part I found that didn't hold up great was the music. Such a classic 90's movie with intense music lending to the intensity of each scene. I couldn't not notice the music blaring during all the exciting scenes.

yep, and then it was on a flat section if even a slight incline and the bus lifts off like a fricking airplane to fly across a missing 50ft gap of roadway

Really should have cut that scene.
A) It was hilariously bad.
B) No suspense, everyone knew they were going to make it.

Come on. They clearly calculated the correct speed that they needed in order to make the jump safely. It was discussed in the movie.

I am embarrassed to say that I've never seen it. Was it a major product of its time and place or would it still be fun to watch now for the first time even in a hokey kinda way?

Kinda yes on both fronts. Certainly worth a watch, but don't expect Oscar level or anything.

I compare to another Keanu action movie around the same time, Point Break. Yes, a product of its time. Yes, kind of hokey, but to be honest, I think we realized they were a little hokey even back then. Both are still fun movies.

It is but 1994 was an unbelievably stacked year. Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, Interview With The Vampire, Forrest Gump, Quiz Show, Ed Wood, Natural Born Killers. Not sure Speed tops any of those.
