Some Updates on the LOTR series. It will be the most expensive TV show of all time.

Apparently will cost 1.5 billion. Also, Peter Jackson is in talks to have some involvement. I do want him to be a part of it, but I hope he doesn't have the final say in everything. The show will be filmed in New Zealand. Probably looking at at least another couple of years till release. Stay tuned.

Damn. I’m fine with PJ being involved. Just as long as it’s more LOTR and less Hobbit tone to it

Yeah I’m going to need some more sources on that. Maybe over the course of 10 seasons.

They paid $250 million just for the rights. Early report said the first season would cost about $100 million to produce. I wonder how long they plan this to go.

Yeah, I saw some reports a few months ago that the series would have over a billion dollar budget for the entire series. That number seems to be growing. They are going all out for this.

Are the rights only to LOTR, or direct LOTR characters, or did they get all of Tolkein's catalogue?
Silmarillion would be the most astonishing series ever if done right, but I honestly don't think it can be put onto the screen. Specifically the first few chapters where it explains the roots of creation and the wars among the Valar and Melkor (basically the story of the Angels vs Satan, except played out over a virgin earth)
Theres also so much content, yet not that much deppe details. There would have to be lots of dialogue and plot filled in and that could ruin the story. Nevertheless, I just hope they don't frick it up.

I'm pumped about this. The people making decisions should be smart enough to look at the difference between LOTR and the Hobbit and avoid the traps.
They also have the ability to look at GOT and take lessons from that. The amount they are investing gives me hope they will get this right.
I would love to eventually get a well made Sauron origin story.

Maybe they meant purchasing the rights, developing the series (maybe multiple series), and advertising them as well. If it cost $250 million for the rights, that’s down to $1.25 billion. If they do 10 seasons at 10 episodes apiece with $10 million per episode budgets on average, we’re at a billion. That leaves $250 million for advertising over the course of 10 years. Probably won’t cost that much.

What a waste. They could have developed a decent Blizzard property into an epic series with that kind of money.

Or an Elder Scrolls series.

Why do a long drawn out series on a story that's been thoroughly done already and has no suspense at all to it's ending?
I hope they do this right and it ends the way it should.
Cersei winning the throne.

What are you talking about. This series is going to be about the fall of Numenor. It’s going to take place 3000 years before lord of the rings and will showcase what “the fall of men” is.

Ok, i thought it was a series version of the lord of the rings.

So they aren't doing young Aragorn like what was originally reported?
This is fantastic news. I would love for them to start at the beginning, but Numenor is definitely a good starting point. If it is very successful, then maybe some of those spinoff opportunities they keep talking about could tackle some of the First Age stories. I'd love to see Beren and Luthien, Fall of Gondolin, the Children of Hurin, and Voyage of Earendil. Although some of those stories may be confusing to those who don't know the history of the Silmarils and the sons of Feanor and how it's all connected.
As long as they stay as close as possible to the source material, I think it'll be great.

quote:I'm pumped. I'd also have liked to see the First Age too, but that might be too disconnected for casual LOTR/Hobbit film fans. Numenor is the Second Age, it has Sauron and Mordor, the Ring, and very likely the guys who become the Nazgul. If you've never read Tolkien but watched the films, you'd have some ideas about what's going on. And it definitely should shed some light about why Sauron was concerned about Gondor, and particularly about Aragorn.

I'm leery of Jackson's involvement. He did a great job with LOTR, but absolutely butchered The Hobbit.

Interesting, I think we get a little clue as to when it is.
Here's a website with some legit info-
LINK
I noted that they say 5 seasons.
Here's Amazon's offical map page for the show
LINK
If you look at that page, it actually has 5 maps. It could be coincidence, but I could see this being a map for each season.
1st map has Numenor. 2nd doesn't, but does have Annuminas in the North; that was the seat of Arnor.
Other things of note-
Map 1 has more wooded areas in the North, where Annuminas appears. Far less densely wooded in map 2. Just a little patch, east of a bridge on the Men-i-Naugrim, crossing the Baranduin...
Map 1 also entitles an area Khazad-Dum; that changes to Moria in map 2.
Map 2 also has Minas Anor, Minas Ithil and Osgiliath in the South (which would be Gondor). It also goes ahead and names Mordor in the second map, along with Orodruin and Barad-Dur.
maps 3-5 are basically empty of names, although forests change.
So my early guess is that season 1 will be Numenor, ending with the fall. Middle-Earth main continent will be mostly elves and Sauron's, the names are Elvish (and Dwarvish) on the mainland. As I remember, Sauron did take power and declare himself before Numenor interceded, he called himself Annatar early on to get in good with the Elves.

Sweet! I really want to see a show about the Second Age mainly focusing on Elendil & sons.

Jesus. I hope they are giving Wheel of Time at least somewhat of a budget. Not sure they can even afford it after that.
