To be fair, I don’t think Star Wars will ever resonate with China, regardless if its good or not. The Evil Empire is a bit awkward with them given their country’s history. They just want single bad guys who have no issues with them being bad. They want things that are morally simple. They don’t like films that are morally complex or when a government is the bad guy.

To be fair, Solo’s numbers can’t be blamed on competition. Avengers opened a month ago, and Dead Pool has an R rating. No other movie dared to challenge Solo this weekend. It’s a huge movie weekend, and it’s very uncommon for only one movie to be released Memorial Day weekend.
I haven’t seen it, but the audiences reaction and reviews are positive. The only competition upcoming is Incredibles 2 and Oceans 8 in two weeks. Both will have some crossover appeal, but the next mainstream blockbuster isn’t until the end of June when the Jurassic World sequel is released.
It has a chance to do solid numbers for the next few weeks, but it is currently a bomb. That label may not be fair because it still did solid numbers, but it fell well below expectations.
