So, I watched Caddyshack, and I have to admit, I didn't get the hype...

Sure, it had funny moments. But I was not impressed with it being a cult classic.

most low comedies are highly specified to a time and age of viewing

I just couldn't suspend disbelief enough with the gopher's antics.

This. In other words, you have to be there. I also think that attitudes related to "what's funny" are somewhat generational. A good example might be the old Saturday Night Live stuff with John Belushi & Co. It was completely hilarious back in the day as we were sitting around the TV smoking pot and ritually watching Saturday Night!! I'm sure many in the subsequent generations don't find it funny at all and likewise I really never got into the newer SNL stuff after the original crew went their separate ways.

Did you watch the actual movie or a chopped up TV version? There's a big difference.

This. I actually liked Caddyshack back when I first saw it and was too young to understand much of it. I watched it again in college and didn't find it nearly as funny. It just hasn't aged well for me. It still has some classic moments from it that are laugh out loud.

I have never laughed harder at a film in a theater than when seeing Caddyshack when it was first released.

If you play golf, than Murray's "18th at Augusta" soliloquy is the greatest thing ever filmed. There's so many quotable lines from the movie even if you don't play golf.

My 15 y/o son saw it for the first time (uncut) last year. He was killing himself laughing. Also, he says Airplane! is the funniest movie he's ever seen.

Kid's got good taste.
