I just hope we can get Connelly back. She was such an important piece of the show, and it's not the same without her. It's not as good.
It's really a strange choice only 20 episodes in. There's the one part I get - they said from the outset this show is set in the year preceding the movie, in the same universe. Ultimately, all of these characters need to be gone at some point.
But they are making it increasingly difficult to maintain that link. In the movie, I remember the aquarium train - now, that's gone.
Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I had hoped they had a 5 season plan to wrap this up and segue into the movie. It seems like that's becoming increasingly more difficult now. Of course, I never read the comic from which it's based off, so that should probably factor in as well.

From the executive producer. Not sure if flashbacks, but sounds like she’s alive.

DEADLINE: While Melanie is now believed dead, the finale leaves hope that she might still be alive. What can you tell us about the fate of this character?
CLEMENTS: We are pleased that Melanie will join us for Season 3.

I’m done with this.... maybe I’ll come back when I can stream several seasons at a time

I don't know if I remembered or realized that this was set a year before the movie. That's interesting.

Man, honestly I would have never thought it would get to five seasons. I figured it would be a show that I enjoyed, that nobody else did, and would get cancelled after a season or two. So I'm glad it's still going for at least a third season.
I will say this...after rewatching the movie over the weekend, I forgot just how terribly stupid the ending of it was. I actually like the movie, but the end is laughably bad.

my bad that was a typo: yearS. I forgot exactly how many, but it was envisioned as a series set quite a few years before the movie, same universe/timeline though.
I have a feeling they've backed off that, even if they wont say it outright.

wait Cokes....are you saying that a highly addictive synthetic drug that also happens to be highly explosive is stupid? You're joking

I don't even mean that aspect of it. But blowing the train to pieces and essentially killing off the entirety of humanity seems dumb. And then the two kids on their own in the frozen wilderness, with a fricking polar bear right over there, was more stupid.

I read that entire interview, and it sounds like she very well could be dead and only appearing in flashbacks. The EP said the only reason the research station plotline developed was because they couldn't get Jennifer Connelly for the full season, wouldn't be surprised if they couldn't get her for all of season 3 either. This show must have a pretty bad budget given how many people they keep losing to other shows/projects (Connelly, Jinju, even Miles).

That's so weird to me. Like you commit to a show and then leave after one season? Why commit in the first place? It does nothing for the show, and can actually paint the writers into a corner like we are seeing.
And I assume it is flashbacks. It actually would be pretty cheap if she were still alive because of how much they hyped it up that she was dead. They made it seem like she literally couldn't survive, so any explanation of her surviving (including mine from earlier in the thread) won't make much sense.

Actually, what I read was a different interview with the EP on a site called TVLine. Full quote on losing Connelly and the link below:
LINK
This interview also makes it sound more like Melanie is dead and Connelly will likely be appearing in flashbacks:
LINK
quote:
TVLINE | Talk about the plan to stretch out Melanie’s fate for the second half of the season. Was that about you losing Jennifer Connelly at a certain point, but you wanted to keep the character “around” a bit longer?
Basically, yes. Jennifer has been such a great partner in this and also has a very busy professional life…. [Showrunner] Graeme [Manson] knew very early on, so he and the writing team came up with this really great idea of the research station and then the “time collision” that took us to the end of the season. Having the ticking clock of “We need to make sure we have some place to be at a certain time!” is always valuable, and with a very limiting Wilford always wondering what is happening. When that creative decision came up early in the season break, it was exciting to hear. It’s always fun to have a strong emotional reaction to a creative pitch.
This interview also makes it sound more like Melanie is dead and Connelly will likely be appearing in flashbacks:
quote:
TVLINE | You did kind of leave the door open. I mean, Melanie wasn’t found dead. She could have been discovered and rescued by some group of nomads we didn’t know existed….
She could; that might be “jumping the shark” a bit based on everything we expressed thus far, but….
TVLINE | She is done for, we shouldn’t be speculating?
I don’t know if I’m going on record that she is “done for,” but I don’t know that she is alive.
TVLINE | Have viewers seen the last of Jennifer Connelly?
We are pleased that Jennifer will join us for Season 3.

Also, I agree with you that it's annoying Connelly took the role if she couldn't commit to filming the full show. She's great in that role, but they could have gotten someone else who would have been great that could have given more consistency to the plot. Melanie is such an important character, sucks to lose her early because Connelly is busy or they can't afford her.

Just finished. Guess Jennifer Connelly was too costly to keep, though I’m seeing some reports she’ll be back in season 3.
I was happy to see those.

I binge watched Seasons 1 and 2 over the last month. It dragged some in Season 1, but I'm glad I charged through it because the show's pretty great IMO.
Question to y'all who have seen the movie. Do you recommend watching the movie at this junction or would it be because to let all this play out and see if the movie actually does have some continuity with the show?
Posted on 4/2/21 at 2:46 pm to indianswim
I don't see the show can logically have any continuity with the movie, but logic doesn't have to apply in Hollywood.
Posted on 4/2/21 at 9:19 pm to PsychTiger
Yeah the show really doesn’t have much of anything to do with the movie. You’d be fine watching the movie without ruining any part of the show IMO.

Looks like season 3 just wrapped and I just read an article they renewed for season 4 ahead of season 3 airing. I'm not sure where they are headed, but I really hope having things locked down helps some of the writing get better.

Right. The show is a fun ride though. I'll definitely tune in for S3 after I try to remember how S2 ended.
