I made a thread like this before this board existed, I think:
9 cast members, comprising of
>= 1 minority
>= 2 women
A Weekend Update desk
Mine (very difficult choices were made)
Dan Aykroyd
Chris Farley
Bill Hader
Phil Hartman
Jan Hooks
Norm Macdonald (WU)
Tim Meadows
Bill Murray
Maya Rudolph

frick the quotas, give me Norm, Carvey, Mike Myers, Spade, Farley, and Phil Hartman and you'll have the best sketch show ever.
If you need a chick, give Farley a wig. If you need a minority, call in Tim Meadows off the bench.

Hard to make a Dream Team cast because the chemistry between certain duo's or trio's were perfect together.
Example: I don't know if Aykroyd & Farley would work as well in a skit as Belushi/Aykroyd or Sandler/Farley did. It was different generations of humor.

You absolutely need Eddie Murphy. In his SNL prime he was the show.

Aykroyd & Farley
Farley is a guy whose chops many overlook because of his physical humor. Farley is only half a notch below Hartman in wit, if you ask me.

It was a tough decision to leave him off. The reason I chose Tim over Eddie is because Tim is the best ensemble member possible, whereas Eddie is a star. We're lucky that the rest of the cast sucked while he was around, because if he was in a cast with even the likes of Carvey and Hartman, we'd just get the Eddie Murphy Show every week.
In a strange way, he's the only one whose exclusion is sort of a compliment.

I was born in 1981, so that influences my choices.
Bill Murray
Eddie Murphy
Darryl Hammond
Will Ferrell
Chris Farley
Amy Poehler
Tina Fey
Bill Hader
Will Forte
I would have taken Norm for WU, but Poehler and Fey are two of the funniest women on SNL, so I hit your quotas and filled out Weekend Update.

I can’t take any list serious that doesn’t include Phil Hartman

Hartman is the greatest ensemble member ever. You don't need Meadows for that.

The talent that SNL is amazing IMO. But Eddie absolutely saved that show after all the 70s talent moved on.
That said, I'm 100% for Phil Hartman as posted. Not his show, but a true everyman. One of my favorite SNL skits is LINK

This. Chemistry is everything. I'm not sure Ferrell would work outside of OTeri,Kattan, and Hammond who often kept him in check.
If I'm building for chemistry:
I build the show around:
Hartman (I'm taking Hartman over Murray. He's a bit less of an ego on screen, strangely enough, when that's his primary schtick)
Farley - More versatile than Belushi honestly. And better physical comedy
Murphy - No question
Role Players
Dana Carvey (could exist outside of Meyers, who would JUST miss the list for me)
Gilda Radner (her or Hooks, kind of toss up. If I go Hooks, I probably take Shannon below)
Bill Hader
Dan Akroyd - these two may seem similar but I find them very different.
Cheri Oteri (I want to go Shannon, but she crosses with Radner pretty well)
Andy Samberg - Still thinking over the last slot, this is my current guess.
Just missed: Murray, Chevy Chase, Mike Meyers, Molly Shannon, Amy Poehler, Belushi, Meadows, Hooks, Lovitz, Armisen, Hammond, Spade, Gasteyer
Arguments could be made for Chase and even the underrated John Lovitz. And if we're counting some of the few episode players - Martin Short immediately goes near the top of my list and probably makes me rethink Dana Carvey.
I really want to choose Norm simply for his Weekend Update, but he just isn't versatile enough for me.

No reason to have Carvey and Spade. I’m not saying they both aren’t deserving but when you have such a huge talent pool, you should get more variety. They can play the same roles.
