LOVE LOVE LOVE that skit.
“This Filet-o-fish? Aid from Italy. Sent to Somalia, *moves sandwich from one tray to another* intercepted by warlords!” *shoves sandwich in his mouth*
As far as Phil himself goes, his nickname in the writer’s room was “Glue” because no matter what the skit was, his effort could always pull it together and make it work regardless of the material’s quality.

A lot of it is probably showing the age of the posters.
The original cast are legends but a lot of us spent a ton of time watching the casts there from 86-94 (Hartman, Carvey, Myers, Sandler, etc) and then about 96-2000s(Ferrell, Hammond, Tina Fey, etc).
Sudekis doesn’t even pop up on my radar and that’s mainly a function of how little I know of more recent years compared to about the first 30 years.

Eddie Murphy
Julia Louis-Dreyfus
Gilda Radner
Belushi
Murray
Hartman
Carvey
Norm
Farley
Although Belushi and Farley might make casting sketches tough, because of the overlap, I go with the talent and the funny. Aykroyd would be my first alternate. I thought about the things he would offer (particularly as a writer) over, maybe Hartman, but Hartman is going to be the better option, 90% of the time. If I didn't take both fat guys, I would reluctantly dump Farley for Aykroyd.

So even in a Fantasy world we have to check the box and put women and minorities?

quote:Yes. It’s important for the ensemble of a nationally-televised 90-minute show like this to be diverse because the characters they must portray inevitably will be diverse. Just go with it. Don’t be a wet blanket.

Sorry don't get either of these especially Dreyfus. She was a non factor and I've watched the show since it started.
The females from the modern era (Fey,Pohler,Wiig) were just better on the show than those in the 70's and 80's and it's not particularly close.Maybe they got more air time and had more leeway than those in the past.

Agreed.
JLD may be talented but it sure didn’t show in that cast. Arguments can be made that Dick Ebersol is to blame, given that he shoved certain cast members and characters down people’s throats.
Eddie Murphy? Worked because he was extremely talented.
Joe Piscopo? Don’t fricking get me started.
One of the unsung members of that cast who actually had talent is Tim Kazurinsky, best known as Sweetchuck from the Police Academy movies.

I went with the two most talented females in the show's history. If Madeline Kahn had been on the show as a regular cast member, she would have bumped JLD.

No offense, but - one worse than the next. Now, the men on the show the past 10 to 12 years aren't any more talented, but again.

Ok, why not put Robert Downey Jr on your list?Makes about as much sense.

Hilarious. The OP was about the best CAST MEMBERS.Not what they did after the show.

He isn't as good at comedy as any of the guys on my list.

Fine. Read "Jane Curtain" instead of JLD.

Exactly.
Same reason I didn’t put Billy Crystal on my list. Incredible comedian, short term cast member who was basically doing his own schtick instead of showing range.
Not his fault, as he was part of the “superstar cast” of 1984 which brought in him, Martin Short, and others to try and save the show. But it still isn’t enough to get me to pick him over people who had 4-5 seasons under their belt.

Ratings don’t necessarily mean quality.
The Simpsons gets high ratings these days but seasons 1-8 are seen as having far superior quality to anything since about 1998.

and Tropic Thunder)

If I want to see Alec Baldwin be an insufferable prick, I can watch Glengarry Glen Ross.
