Henry Winkler & Happy Days is the definitive answer

I’d say the janitor from Scrubs as well
His character was originally supposed to be a figment of JD's imagination.
Not so much "side characters," but the guest stars on shows like Seinfeld and Law and Order are what kept those shows fresh.

I'm sure this has been discussed but is Robert really a "side character"
I consider side characters to be like Perd Hapley on Parks and Rec or Apu from the Simpsons

Agree to disagree, there’s no way I would consider Boyd Crowder a side character. He’s completely integral to the plot, theme, and characters of the entire show, even more than Rayland in is some aspects
I think where it gets a little murky for Boyd is that he was originally supposed to die in the first episode. It's also why he missed a few episodes in S1 and was briefly in a few of the others. Took some time to write him back in.
But, once he was back in, I agree he falls into one of the main/essential characters.

Two bits that I still laugh at:
- the Car-B-Que
- Sheldon DeVein

I misunderstood the OP.
Hmmm, I'll think of a different answer.

Does anyone know why seasons 5-8 of wings is no longer on paramount plus?

Sort of related, but a character list I like includes:
Ernest T. Bass - Andy Griffith Show
Colonel Flagg - M*A*S*H
Harry the Hat - Cheers
Bebe Glazer - Frasier
When you think of those 4 shows (AGS - 249 eps, M*A*S*H - 256 eps, Cheers - 275 eps, Frasier - 264 eps) - those are decade-spanning series, all around 250 or so episodes and those 4 "best bang for the buck" characters were in maybe 2 to 4 percent of all episodes.
Ernest T. Bass appeared in 5 episodes, Flagg in 6, Harry the Hat in 6, Bebe in 11.
That's incredible, particularly Ernest T. Bass. Effectively, these characters appeared roughly once every other season except Bebe who appeared roughly once per season.
