I watched this the other night and something has bothered me for a long time about this movie, one of my favorites. When Andy repeatedly gets buttfricked by the bad guys, where is Red and the rest of his friends? Why don't they gang up on one of the perps? What a bunch of pussies.

Something tells me that either they didnt' know about it until the guards got involved, or they were afraid to do anything because of what the guards would do to them.

Nah, Red comments on it a lot in his narration, everyone would know. Stephen King just kept it as a plot device, but it's just not how people behave.

The "Sisters" were allowed to get to Andy by the guards. Not because they hated Andy, but just because the guards didn't give a shite if the Sisters did that to all newbies.

2 of the friends appeared on Seinfeld. One was the dry cleaner who was letting his wife wear Jerry's mom's stuff. The other was Brodie, the guy who made Jerry and Kramer bootleg the movies.

I thought all that happened before Andy made his friends.

basically it did

It happened before Andy started doing the tax returns for the guards so they didn't protect him. Andy would get attacked by the sisters when he was alone, so there was no one around to help him.

Yeah, but he says in his narration that Andy never told anybody who was doing it to him. Also, in the narration, is Red looking back on events? It seems like he's remembering most of it. It doesn't seem like he shifts to present day until he "misses his friend," and is about to get paroled.

Real world would be Andy saying "that MF just buttfricked me" to his gang, they say "we gonna beat the shite out of the a-hole".

This comes from my long experience with prison life, I visited my deadbeat brother-in-law once in Orleans lockup.

supatigah is right

all this happened before andy and red and red's crew became friends, so no one was there to protect him.

Exactly. They didn't really become friends until Andy got them all beer after taring the roof. At the time when Andy was getting buttfricked, the guys just let him sit at their table.

Im pretty sure Andy was friends with Red while the buttfricking was going on..because when the Sisters beat Andy up real good, all his friends were finding rocks for him when he returned. I think the friendship started in the middle of the fricking of the butt.

Red always liked Andy from the beginning, but they weren't friends at that time.

i can't remember just how close they are at the time. but there was a conversation between them about the sisters.

quote:

Red: seems the sisters have taken a liking to you.

Andy: don't suppose it would help if i told them i wasnt gay.

Red: neither are they, you would have to be human first.

not the exact quote but you know what i am talking about.

either way, he may have only been close with red when it was going on. and red was not a young man.

It also seems to me that men in prison aren't in a hurry to risk their lives to keep a fellow prisoner from being buttf'ed. You're basically trying to stay alive and not get buttf'ed yourself.

This is why prisoners form gangs and crap.....to either defend themselves from getting buttf'ed or killed or to buttF and kill others.

And Andy's friends didn't seem like the gang type anyway.

Er, they were in a jail cell. You don't get to just walk around when you want to. The sisters were let out by the guards.

This post makes the most sense.

Red and Andy were friends at the time. Granted, their relationship developped more later, but there was a mutual liking. Red and his group, were powerless against the Sisters. They were passive, didn't want to be labeled as trouble makers(by guards), and were just not present. It is prison afterall. The Sisters always struck when Andy was alone. Two years of agony..

But just as Jesus was persecuted....so was Andy.
