He did not get raped then. Remember Red said Boggs did not stick anything in his mouth but just beat him within an inch of his life. And that was after the roof tar so you are correct about the guards not letting them out.

It's been over 23 year since I read the book, but everyone knew what was going on. The Sisters were a lot more fearsome in the book as well. It didn't happen often, but Red talks of fresh bruises from time to time and also about stuffing toilet paper in your arse to stop/hide the bleeding.
As a previous poster said, Andy's buddies were not his buddies until he got them the beer--BTW...in the book, they only got two beers each, and it wasn't ice cold, it was "piss warm."
