Movies...

The beginning of Up

Schindler's List

The ending of Saving Private Ryan

Frequency, not so much sad just very emotional for those who've lost their father

Television...

My Lunch/My Fallen Idol, Scrubs at its best was just incredible

Jurassic Bark, one of the best episodes of animated television ever. And I don't even like Futurama all that much.

GF suggested we watch the documentary Dear Zachary last night. Holy effing balls, that was soul crushingly sad. A sad movie can be appreciated for the emotions it conjures, but knowing that that all actually happened kind of makes it tough to recover from.

Places in the Heart. When Sally Field's character says goodbye to Moses (Danny Glover) near the end. The next 5 minutes after that are powerful, but need to be seen in the context of the movie.

Das Boot. Ending when the sub sinks in front of the captain

Furious 7 - the last scene for me. Probably because of what happened to Paul Walker in real life. If his accident doesn't happen, it's not the same.

i'm 99% sure that scene was filmed after, and because, of his death.

Not the saddest, but the one that pisses me off the most is Blackhawk Down.

And I quote:

"Sergeant First Class Shughart, United States Army, distinguished himself by actions above and beyond the call of duty on 3 October 1993, while serving as a Sniper Team Member, United States Army Special Operations Command with Task Force Ranger in Mogadishu, Somalia. Sergeant First Class Shughart provided precision sniper fires from the lead helicopter during an assault on a building and at two helicopter crash sites, while subjected to intense automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenade fires. While providing critical suppressive fires at the second crash site, Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader learned that ground forces were not immediately available to secure the site. Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader unhesitatingly volunteered to be inserted to protect the four critically wounded personnel, despite being well aware of the growing number of enemy personnel closing in on the site. After their third request to be inserted, Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader received permission to perform this volunteer mission. When debris and enemy ground fires at the site caused them to abort the first attempt, Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader were inserted one hundred meters south of the crash site. Equipped with only his sniper rifle and a pistol, Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader, while under intense fire from the enemy, fought their way through a dense maze of shanties and shacks to reach the critically injured crew members. Sergeant First Class Shughart pulled the pilot and the other crew members from the aircraft, establishing a perimeter which placed him and his fellow sniper in the most vulnerable position. Sergeant First Class Shughart used his long range rifle and side arm to kill an undetermined number of attackers while traveling the perimeter, protecting the downed crew. Sergeant First Class Shughart continued his protective fire until he depleted his ammunition and was fatally wounded. His actions saved the pilot's life. Sergeant First Class Shughart's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest standards of military service and reflect great credit upon him, his unit and the United States Army."

I'm sure it was. It was added as a tribute. Still really sad though...

It's hard to imagine what was going through the heads of Shughart and Gordon. Those guys were part of the top tier of America's elite soldiers and knew exactly what they were getting theirselves into. They did it anyway.

I'm not trying to minimize the actions of a guy who makes a split second decision to jump on a grenade to shield his brothers or the guy who fights like a demon, but also in the interest of self preservation. Nobody is awarded the MOH who doesn't have gigantic balls. But IMO, what Shughart and Gordon did is almost beyond comprehension. Maybe they thought they could round up the aircrew, escape from the crash site and hole up somewhere until the cavalry arrived. But they had to know the odds were stacked against them. Everyone should know their names.

And maybe that was first blush from the air - but obviously there was a huge risk that some or all of the crew were seriously injured. I think they thought they could hold the site and would get reinforcements in an hour or two.

They weren't defeated by the bad guys, either, from a tactical standpoint. They exhausted their ammo. If someone would have thought to swing back by with just 2 more Delta guys and a helo full of ammo - who knows? But all the focus was on Bull and Elvis' crash site, which became flypaper and the focal point of the rest of the battle.

I loved mystic river when it first came out, but I tried watching a few months ago and thought it aged horribly. The Kevin bacon wife storyline was so cheesy.
