OK, commenters: Fire up your engines because we’re tackling a big one in our latest edition of Vs., pitting the Star Wars Prequels against the Star Wars Sequels and declaring definitively which galactic triptych is the superior set of films. We’re looking at box office data and Tomatometer scores for Episodes 1-3 and 7-9, as well as which trilogy delivered the best moments and gave us the most memorable characters. Are you a Darth Maul vs. Qui-Gon vs. Obi-Wan person? Or do you prefer your lightsaber battles more of the Throne Room variety? Does a Jar Jar Binks outweigh the awesomeness of Ewan McGregor’s young Obi-Wan? And how do they compare to Babu Frik?

Which does this board prefer?

Prequels. I liked them before the sequels were even a thing, contrary to popular opinion. Revenge of the Sith was a great movie, and General Grievous is one of the most underrated Star Wars characters of all time.

They are both awful but I'd rather watch the prequels.

They are stupid in harmless way.

The sequels are bad in a very offensive way.

It’s tough, but the Star Wars sequels for all their problems are at least competently made from a craftsmanship standpoint.

Sequels.

The prequels just aren't very good. The dialogue is bad, the love story is forced and hokey, and the pacing is insanely slow.

The sequels deliver higher entertainment value, so long as you don't get emotional over them.

The third prequel movie is better than anything the sequels had going for them, and the prequels had amazing lightsaber battles throughout.

The first sequel movie was great. I haven't seen the third one yet.

The force awakens is better than any of the prequels IMO, but all of the prequels are better than TLJ. I have not seen rise of Skywalker yet

Revenge of the Sith and The Force Awakens are the two best movies of the 6.

After that, what’s the 3rd? Phantom Menace? Rise? TLJ? Attack of The Clones?

What’s the worst?
I think the majority would say Attack of the Clones, then TLJ.

So I’ve got Phantom Menace by a hair. Probably because of Duel of Fates is better than anything in Rise..& the Leia scenes are awful.

Skywalker has a ridiculous premise (even for Star Wars) but Finn’s attack on t the Imperial ships was pretty good.

I think the sequels take a major hit for barely having Luke fricking Skywalker in them...

So the prequels, but by the slimmest of margins.

Just ranking the episodes:

5
4
6
3
7
9
1
2
8

Since 1983, the two best live action Stars productions are The Mandalorian and Rogue One though.

Prequels were great stories with their great moments, they were just clumsily directed with flaws (Anakin kid, Jar Jar, wooden Hayden, awful dialogue).

Sequels are steaming piles of monkey shite that are flawed from their very cores with flaws tossed in as well.

Prequels stakes were not as high. You knew how that was going to end.

The sequels on the other hand took their own direction. It’s hard to compare the 2.

I can bring myself to watch the Prequels and actually enjoy some parts in Episode I and III.

Recently watched Episode I this past Christmas and its not "that bad" relative to the Sequels.

Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan is just so damn good to watch in the Prequels. There is nothing like that in the Sequels. Oddly Kylo's emo kid acting might be the best thing, that character could have been amazing, but they fckked it up.

Clone Wars and Rebels were better than both.

I would say that the Prequels are better even though Force Awakens is arguably the best movie of the bunch.

I would rank them as follows:

3
7
9
1
2
8. Problem is that Last jedi is so far from sniffing Attack of the Clones arse in this race that it knocks out the sequels from contention.

Now, all of this said, neither were world beaters and no where close to the EU stuff (Rebels, Clone Wars, R1 and Mando).

Maybe it’s because I kind of grew up with the prequels but I definitely prefer them over the sequels. While they overused cgi and the dialogue wasn’t great, it felt original, from the mind of Lucas. Also Revenge of the Sith is a legit good movie. The sequels lack a complete story and they feel super corporate. They also weren’t very creative imo.

Maybe I have a soft spot for them because I was a kid when these came out... I remember going to see Episode 1 (when I was 11) with my brother and dad. Simpler times indeed.

I agree with all of this. The sequel trilogy just feels like modern day SJW bullshite. You can see a lot of it thrown in with the main hero now being female. I don't care Rey's female.. what I don't like is the SJW crap shoved in our faces. I actually haven't seen Episode 9 yet, but I rewatched Episode 7 last night and started 8 again. I cringed at the beginning of 7 when Rey had to point out 2 or 3 times to Finn she didn't need her hand held.
