Yeah, we had to do that and Beowulf. For a student of average intellect, those were tough. I could kind of understand why the teacher wanted us to do Canterbury Tales as Middle English is close enough to modern English to be interesting, but I'm pretty sure our teacher made us do Beowulf to frick with us. It was just memorizing sounds that had no meaning.

If he's going to have the actors speak the lines exactly as Shakespeare wrote them, then fine. Having them speak in a language that was dead for 400 years at the time the play was written is stupid.

It wasn’t written in Middle English, it was written in Early Modern English or Elizabethan English.
Canterbury Tales was written in Middle English.
