I thought it was pretty good, but not perfect or amazing when I saw it in the theater. I saw satisfied with it.

For a while I didn't understand why so many online are so vocal about hating it, but after reading through a lot of responses, the common subtext seems to me to be that the vast majority of the haters are Alien franchise fanboys who went into it with the hardcore expectation of seeing the immediate back-story of the Alien franchise in the form of a prequel and instead got a different movie that only tangentially touched on Alien.

And I get that. It's sort of like why I hate LOST because I watched it in real-time from the beginning expecting it to be a science fiction show only for all of the sci-fi back-story to be dropped in favor of a lame metaphysical, quasi-religious Nicholas Sparks ending.

Like I said, they expected Alien 0.

Most people who hated can blame their ungodly high expectations. And I say that understanding why the expectations were so high to begin with.

This is true, I did have super high expectations. I found that the trailer for this movie looked amazing. But in the end the trailer was part of the problem also. It shows the alien ship leaving, then Prometheus smashing into it and it falling back to the planet. In other words it showed too much in that regard. We all knew the alien ship wouldn't make it off the planet.

I hated it and I didn't want to see any alien backstory. And I had optimistic expectations but nothing overzealous.

Just Some of the reasons I hated Prometheus:
Pretentious
Stupid Religious Subtext (but according to Scott, only an atheist truly understands religeon)
Other than the main chick, strongly unlikable characters
Awful dialogue
Age makeup
Dumb science from dumb scientists
Is she a robot or isn't she
Taking helmets off
Bring head back to life
Space jockeys not being cool looking aliens
David learning alien language being illogical
David experimenting on fellow crew
Boyfriend not noticing David putting finger in drink (I don't care how drunk he is, and he didn't seem that drunk, he would have noticed)
geoligist making maps gets lost
Biologist try's to let unknown penis vagina creature
Chick who just had ceaserian running around like an action star
The Prometheus school of running
Faux alien at the end to say frick you to the audience.

Count me on the side that enjoyed it. I just wish Scott would just tie it in with Alien in the second one instead of stretching it out that long. I'm now much less excited now for the second than I previously was

No. Not really. It sucked more powerfully than the 13-year-old Vietnamese prostitute who serviced Ridley Scott during the filming of this piece of shite.

ALL OF THIS.

I didn't want Alien 0, but I wanted something that add significant myth to the world of Alien, and all of these things just added up to a whole lot of nothing mixed with poor storytelling.

I will however admit that my expectations were high, I mean Alien is one of the greatest movies of all time, and the series is probably one of the best for overall quality. Alien 1-3 are legit great and Resurrection, while weird, is actually really good (and the whole...SPOILER.... Ripley clone thing is fun.)

If it weren't for this board, I wouldn't have guessed that anyone really enjoyed Prometheus.

Tried it twice. I Could see your point of it were a solid stand alone, but it's not.

It would be fair to say that I had huge expectations for Prometheus because of how much I like the Alien movies. It would not be true to say that I didn't like it because it wasn't a direct prequel. How it connected with the Alien movies was about what I expected and hoped for. I didn't like it because I thought the story itself was lacking, although it did have some cool elements. Someone earlier said that the engineers are intriguing. I can agree with that.

I skimmed through that, some good debates. Here's where the Lindelof hate comes from, a quote from the Original Discussion thread:

quote:

A couple hours later, a guy showed up at my house, handed me a script and said, "Enjoy. I'll be waiting in my car. When you're done, you can give this back to me." I read the script—it was written by John Spates—and I thought it was great, but it was definitely a dyed-in-the-wool Alien prequel in the sense that there was a direct and clear connectivity between the movies. It relied pretty heavily on the face hugging and chest bursting and acid-for-blood xenomorphs that we'd seen in the other movies. All that was wrapped around this incredibly original and cool sci-fi idea about scientists thinking that they had a bead on what mankind's origins on the planet might be. So I wrote an email that night saying, "I think that that idea is strong enough to carry the movie. We can get to some of that Alien stuff that the audience is definitely going to want to see, but you did that 30 years ago and it's been done many times since. And it would be great to not rely upon it so heavily and here's how you might do that..." And for some crazy reason they hired me, and that was the next year of my life. Read more: Prometheus Writer Damon Lindelof on the Non-Prequel Alien Prequel - Popular Mechanics

The worst. Saying that fans want chestbursting and acid blood is a massive oversimplification.

Read the pre-release, early review thread. I didn't want any connection to Alien. I just wanted a great Ridley Scott sci fi movie. I admit that I had stars in my eyes when the film was announced, but my expectations were lowered gradually and consistently every time news of the film was made public.

My expectations were actually pretty low, and though I like Alien, I'm far from a fanboy. I just wanted a coherent story with memorable characters, and that didn't happen.

From an earlier thread:

This is going to be the equivalent of Asimov linking the robot and Foundation series together and will work about as well which is not well at all.

I'll be tuned in for the next Prometheus for sure. The first one was pretty awesome IMO (and I'm not saying that in jest either). I know people love to bash on it and cry that it didn't make sense, but it really did make plenty of sense IMO.

My point about what?

And it was never supposed to be a standalone, was it? (although I do think it's a really good movie on its own anyway)

I enjoyed the movie, but couldn't get into the Alien movies. I'm 25 so they're a bit outdated for me and I can't stand watching any old sci-fi/horror movies at this point with their now outdated special effects, other than the original Total Recall.
