He doesn't suck nearly as much as Colbert and Kimmel. Shows for people who like to smell their own farts. I'll have to check this Gutfeld guy out.

I wonder if NBC regrets letting the hosts and writers alienate large portions of their viewership.

Additionally, young viewers aren't tuning in for late night talk shows. They are watching clips on TikTok and YouTube. NBC sounds pretty tone deaf to me but I can't say that I expect any different.

I still enjoy watching something light and funny before going to sleep. That's why my routine is to watch 80's early 90's Late Night with David Letterman on youtube. The show had hardly any political commentary, Dave is a great interviewer, and the comedy bits are just stupid and funny for the sake of being stupid and funny. I miss those days.

Meanwhile, Fallon has attracted 30 million subscribers to his YouTube channel, which shows snippets of the chatfest’s segments. But a tipster pointed out, “That really doesn’t drive up ad rates for the regular show — and the network doesn’t want The Tonight Show to exist just to feed YouTube.”

Seems like he’s doing well just on a format they don’t want.

I think Conan has accepted the nightly format is basically dead and is doing other things

I don't understand how the networks keep pouring money into these and continue to act baffled as to why the ratings are so poor now. They're chasing ghosts.

Letterman's retirement was the end of the classic late night talk show (Steve Allen through Carson, through Letterman).

This is really what has killed late night talk shows IMO. Why would anyone stay up late to watch the full show when they can just watch the monologue and the interviews on YouTube on their own time?

Isn't this just demographics?

Young people aren't watching Late Night Shows while older people are.

Old people are more conservative so prefer more conservative late night shows.

I've tried watching Gutfeld and I don't find him funny at all. He makes some joke about Hunter Biden, does some smirk for a couple of seconds, and then moves on. There's no real thought to the joke except a quip and then he moves on.

The jokes don't even land for me (early 20s demographic here).

Only time I’ve ever turned on the late night shows to watch live are when I’m having a bout of insomnia, and even then I’m usually working in a crossword or reading a book. It’s just peppy background noise

You seriously don’t get the Gutfeld jokes? Sheesh. My 16 year old gets the jokes - then again he would have loved Stuff & Maxim mags (when Greg Gutfeld was editor). Damn, used to love reading those in the 90s and early 2000s. Talk about some fine ladies.

Anyway, I worry for my country.

Sometimes I'll watch old Carson episodes on Pluto TV, and it's really striking how calm and laid back he is with guests, whether they were big stars or little old ladies with interesting hobbies. Outside of his sketches and recurring characters, he didn't have the need to always be "on" and stepping all over the guests to maintain the center of attention. It's interesting to see how passive, for lack of a better word, he could be to let the guests speak and see where the interview was going to go.

Yeah, my son and I were also watching this the other day too. He thought they were great. On one he had Carl Sagan and it was an interesting discussion about the future of science (very relatable even today). On another he had Charlton Heston (and they talked beards the whole time) along with some every day folks about various topics. He was the same with all of them.

His biggest laughs were from showing the head shot of some dog who had a TV show compared to his promo shots. The dogs were better. Great stuff.

I mean they aren't really the same type of show, I don't see how you can really compare the two.

I don't find Fallon that funny and Gutfield does seem to be a sharp dude, but it would be laughable to see him try to do funny skits, stand up and interview a variety of different guests every night. Gutfield might can make some good democrat jokes, but the dude couldn't do a standard comedy night show.

Ol' Jimmy doesn't get "too" political, which I like. What annoys me is his desire to become some sort of musical pop star.
