My wife and I both thought the Manson/Tate angle was unnecessary and exploitive. There's something almost psychopathic to me about using the grisly, horrific, brutal real life murder of a woman and her child to drive the narrative beat of your movie then pulling an okie-doke and using slapstick violence to punish the real life villains.
"Nah man, this isn't Adam Walsh - it's just a piñata !Ole!"
I would have watched 3 hours of DiCaprio alone. His subplot was that good and his acting was masterful.

I don't have much else to add, I just frickin love this movie.
The nostalgia is so all-encompassing. Down to the TV Guide covers and the TV shows playing in the background. I've played the soundtrack album to death (with the radio commercials included, it's the best nostalgia album since American Graffiti's album included the Wolfman Jack song intros.)
I'd gladly live the last years of my life in a retirement community with a theme based on the street scenes that Tarantino recreated.
On one of our repeated theater viewings, the power went out in the AMC just as the Manson family was walking up the street to do their dirty work. So anyone who hadn't seen the movie before, left without knowing about the twist ending and just assumed the murders proceeded as usual.

That's sort of how it as for me. It was a good enough movie, and definitely had the QT vibes to it. All in all, I enjoyed it okay enough, I just didn't particularly like it very much.
I also thought the ending was borderline stupid. The movie just went off the rails. And I get that is sort of the point, and it's a "Once upon a time..." kind of movie. But all in all, I was really pumped about this one and ended up coming out of is disappointed. I usually do a good job of tempering expectations, and so I think part of it is that I screwed myself in that regard. I may give it another shot at some point, it's just SUPER long. Also, I still need to watch Jackie Brown since I've never seen that one.

One of his best films and highly underrated in his catalogue
It’s also a bit of a slow burn so you may not like it if that’s what turned you off of OUATIH tho

I liked this film a lot too. But I probably probably put it behind Pulp Fiction, Basterds, and Django.

I loved some of the comments from Tarantino about how he had to tell Leo to dial it back because Rick Dalton was supposed to be a kinda shitty actor, and Leo's laying down lines like the plantation owner from Django

It's the opposite for me. It hasn't gotten better on re-watch the way QTs films usually do. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but it's towards the bottom if I'm ranking his films.

The Rick Dalton frick up, trailer regroup, reshoot, fricking kills it thing is just such an amazing sequence of scenes.

I'm not a big Tarantino guy. I really liked Basterds and Django, the others are OK. I don't really care for violence for violence's sake. It's like he doesn't really know how to end his movies, so he just blows everything up.

Nah, I don’t mind slow burns. I liked Hateful 8, for example. Hell, a lot of QT movies are relatively slow burns. This one just bored me for some reason.
ETA: I’ll echo that the ranch scenes were my favorite of this movie. Tension buildup was great.

The ending when the Manson family scum get massacred was oddly very satisfying despite being very far removed from the actual events by so much time and exposure.
A very sad and sick and old event that somehow was good to see an “alternative ending” for, even if in fiction and nearly 50 years after the fact.

This is the only one of his I dislike.
I think Reservoir Dogs hasn't aged well, but it is still a "landmark" movie.
Kill bill (both) aren't my favorite but I appreciate what he was doing.
Jackie Brown has moments but is uneven.
I just straight up dislike Hateful 8. I feel like he's always had some hubris that has served him well, but backfired here.

Hateful 8 is towards the bottom of his resume for me but I didn’t mind it. Watching the Netflix version that’s broken up into 4 parts helped it not feel like such a chore to watch

I couldn't agree more. The ending was really fricking stupid and the performance of the two leads was the best thing about the movie.
