Though to be fair even though he was awful he clearly took it seriously as he was in a sport he could have easily been killed doing and he did set British records for the ski jump that stood for 20 years.

The reason the Olympics has had so many embarrassingly bad female competitors (see the American/Hungarian ski freestyle chick from a while back) is because they don't have a lot of participation in many sports. The bar for qualification is therefore lowered a lot and you get people like raygun as well as expats who go to other countries just so they can qualify and be called 'Olympians.'
