I've come to accept this explanation too, mainly because of the band aid on the mack of Marcellus' neck. There is some culture that believes that poking a small whole in the back of someone's neck is how you can release their soul.
I don't buy into the "that's why the bullets didn't them" theory, because that sure didn't help Marvin in the back of the car.

One thing I always wondered is how the frick did Butch and Marcellus breathe when ball-gagged after beating the shite out of each other about the face. I don't think that was very realistic. At least one of them would have been struggling to breathe due to swelling and dried blood in the nostrils.
