No disrespect to OP but I heard The Martian was a masterpiece as well when in reality it was just an okay one and done flick. I'm a little leary of the hype this one's getting because it takes me back to 2015 when the Martian came out and that one was a bit of a let down.

I watched The Martian one time and don't really have a desire to see it again. It was perfectly fine but didn't blow me away. This is quite a bit different and a much better book to film adaption imo. Perfectly fine to be learly of the hype, there is a good bit of hype on here especially, but if you like going to the theatres, I'd go. The story is good enough that it will be good on a TV too, but you'll miss out on a good theatre experience.

The Martian is a masterpiece.

Finally got to see it. A nice mix of Interstellar, The Martian and Arrival. I get the praise for the movie, well made, no question.

And I did like it, well enough. I wasn't blown away though. Like some of the other movies above better, but it's well within their ball park.

Yea I can see someone easily liking all three of those more. Those are great movies. I think I’d have PHM above them all, maybe not Interstellar. Interstellar holds up after a lot of watches.

Glad this is doing well at the box office so maybe we can get more movies like this made instead of remake after remake.

Just the hint of a possible sequel is a positive. (Andy Weir, speaking on how 2 characters died , that is.)

The 2 other crewmates or the 2 original scientist crew members that blew themselves up? (The ones that loved talking about all the sex they were having)

The ones on the Hail Mary who had the same genetic makeup as Grace but mysteriously didn't make it to Tau Ceti.

You're really doing yourself a disservice if you don't go see it. It's really well done.

The only thing I didn't love is how they tried to humanize Stratt. She is such a cold/objective principled villain in the book. Making her human hurt her character imo

I know there is a strong contingent of people who hate any deviation from the source material, but in this case I really liked the change.

It was simply refreshing to see a movie without any real villain. This was a movie that just told a story about an event without trying to cram in a good vs evil theme to check a box.

Just got back from seeing this with my wife a few mins ago. Wanted to still catch it before it leaves the big screen.

As said before, really well made. Little long, but I rather they took their time than rush a quality project. Score was solid, sound was never over the top (Looking at you Nolan)

The puppet work for Rocky instead of CGI I hope wakes some people up to limitations of CGI, when there is a quality alternative.

Just makes for a much better product.
Final score - It is worth seeing in the theater.

The robo docs can provide nursing care and meds, but no indication they can perform surgeries.

So assuming no fast cancer or aneurism, I’ve always figured they either died from some issue with the induced coma itself, or something simple like appendicitis.

That’s why he was chosen because so few people can survive the lengthy coma process. Not sure from the books, whether each crewmember who died had the same issue or different ones, but the movie didn’t say.

Book didn’t say. And the gene thing, I always got the impression that having it meant you could survive a long coma, not necessarily that you would.

Still a whole bunch of theory in the whole thing.

I just figure a routine medical issue that nowadays gets taken care of without a big deal took out the two crewmates who happened to have the routine medical issue while in a coma on a spaceship.

Saw it this weekend. It was enjoyable, with some fantastic visuals, but it's not some masterpiece.

Too much suspension of disbelief is required.

It is. It's a bit long. It seems to have about five endings. And I'm sure it's true to the book but it seemed to want to avoid any type of old yeller moments--I'd thought Rocky had sacrificed himself. But no. I thought Grace went back to save Rocky to keep him from suffering, at the expense of being able to go back to earth himself. But no, they can build him a ship....just seemed REALLY determined to have no tears.

Kinda like Chewy should have probably died in Rise of Skywalker. It all would have been sad, but more poignant.

this is my take, although i will say i enjoy this more than Arrival.

That being said, I think Arrival is a wonderful, perfectly directed, shot, and acted spectacle that makes me miserable and I leave whenever my wife puts it on.

Not on the same level, but PHM puts me in the mind of 2010: The Year We Make Contact. A fantastic book and an extremely well cast film that had to omit a lot of science and story to get the plot accross.
