quote:it is reasonable to point out this cliche', which also applies to interstellar and even armageddon. there is no universe that we can inhabit in which a science teacher or an oil driller or retired test pilot or anyone other than a trained, current in good standing astronaut would be sent to space as "our only hope". its a trope, and not a very good one.
It’s a lavishly scaled feel-good environmental outer-space thriller, starring Ryan Gosling as a science geek who is sent many lightyears away to save Earth. So it’s a movie that recalls such lone-astronaut-in-the-void hits as “Gravity” and “The Martian.”
but that's what the book is about so i cant see criticizing the movie over it.
you gotta suspend your logic right off the bat

But the story clearly explains the scenario why non-astronauts had to be considered/used: the "coma gene" greatly restricted who could undertake the mission with the technology available. It's not so far fetched (that some people's genetic makeup can handle a long-term coma better than others) that this conceit requires an eye-roll to believe. Many space missions have science specialists who are more scientists than astronauts. Grace was just the PhD refugee-from-science guy in a crew of three.

there is no universe that we can inhabit in which a science teacher or an oil driller or retired test pilot or anyone other than a trained, current in good standing astronaut would be sent to space as "our only hope".
And the premise is that since it is our "only hope", the craft and systems would be designed (by the entire Earth science community) to be as intuitive as humanly possible, in the case of only one specialist surviving the trip.
And it's not a random Science Teacher, which is a major premise in the book.

too cute
My issue with the novel, not that it will keep me from seeing the movie.

there are certain authors that write to the fan, cheese, gimmick and all, and some that write screaming into the void.
Andy Weir leads into the nerd, but writes for the fan.

If the script stays true to the book PHM will be very good.
Idk.
This movie will live and die on how they handle the Grace/Rocky interactions and as written in the book would play HORRIBLY on screen.

Why don’t you watch the media before you voice judgement?
The story explains in a way that makes perfect sense, even to a bitter cynic like yourself.

There’s no crying about downvotes here.

There's gotta be some money laundering going on, right?
Filmmaking is one of the greatest money laundering opportunities around. If someone told me that 90% of independent films were fronts, I wouldn't find it hard to believe. The amount of fraud in the film industry is unfathomable, but there is much less risk in fraud from Amazon Studios than there is from some fly by night single member production company.
