Man, this thread just goes to show me how little interest I seem to have in "critically-acclaimed"-type movies. Out of the 95 movies listed, I've seen only 29. And there were one or two years listed that I haven't seen any of them. Wow.

who here remembers the dark knight?

The Blues Brothers

The Shining

Now, how many times have you (anyone) seen Ordinary People? what lines and images are burned into your brain?

was it really the best picture released that year? I think they should hold these stupid awards 10 years after the year of release...because nobody in their right mind can tell me that Slumdog Millionaire is a better movie than The Dark Knight

Slumdog Millionaire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Frost/Nixon both good s but at the end of the day Slumdog is an easy vote.

2009
Inglourious Basterds Up in the Air/District 9/The Hurt Locker all very good s, Avatar was a technical masterpiece, but Inglorious Bastards is one of the best s of the decade.

2010
The Social Network very good year for s, enjoyed them all.

2011
Moneyball terrible year sandwiched in the middle of two great years, but really enjoy this and still watch it when I catch it on FX.

2012
Zero Dark Thirty
Like 10' this would've been a tough year to vote, really enjoyed all of the nominations.

2013
The Wolf of Wall Street
I really loved this . Her may have been the best screen play of the decade though.

2014
The Imitation Game

2015
Spotlight Lot of good s in 2015, The Big Short, The Revenant, and Mad Max really great.

2016
Hell or High Water
, Moonlight was probably the worst on this list. I liked the acting in Fences a lot but still had the feel of a play. Liked The Arrival a lot, it was refreshing to see an alien where the aliens didn't come here blow up a bunch of landmarks and a scrappy group of scientist and soldiers save the planet with 3 seconds left. Hacksaw Ridge, and Hidden Figures great stories that I didn't know anything about until I saw them. Hell or High Water was my favorite though, the most complete on the list.

2017
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Really enjoyed just about everything in this . The Shape of Water is a very good that will probably end up winning though. Dunkirk, as with anything Nolan does is very ambitious that delivered. The Post is probably the most pretentious to be made in sometime. Darkest Hour is a great and inspirational , and Gary Oldman deserves the Best Actor. Saw Phantom Thread last night, good acting not sure what to make of it yet. Glad that Get Out got nominated.

I think this is the case only if you are defining "Best Picture" as most memorable, which I don't think is anyone's immediate definition. Nor should it be.

I do wonder , nay hope, that the Academy includes some sort of metric/definition for what "Best Picture" means. I have my own thoughts, but it seems we all do.

Certainly debatable. But I can tell you that In Bruges, Wall-E, The Wrestler, Appaloosa got boned in this discussion.

Not a strong period.

Good catch on In Bruges. Also the previous mention of Tinker Tailor.

Not getting the love on here for Basterds. It has some really slow parts. And the divergence from actual history at the end makes zero sense. That's not how Hitler died. I would have bought the ending better had Hitler not been in it at all. That part really hurt the storytelling, imo.

Yeah, yeah, I know it's fantasy, but the movie presents itself as happening within the historical timeline using fictional characters up to that point. I thought the ending was just stupid.

Also, can we talk about how absolutely stacked 2010 was?

The Social Network - widely considered Fincher's best film, the movie that explored the roots of Facebook

Inception - An epic Nolan film. Probably his best film visually, though I prefer Memento and The Prestige

The King's Speech - A well-acted historical drama. It, of course, won.

127 Hours - A daring film that is essentially a one-man show.

Black Swan - Aronofsky's most accessible film anchored by two all-time great performances

The Fighter - David O Russell at his most David O Russell-y with great actors bouncing great dialog off one another and a great Christian Bale B-plot that could be its own film

The Kids Are All Right - Not a huge fan, but it's well-acted and there's a few great scenes, like the dinner party

Toy Story 3 - Maybe Pixar's highest achievement

True Grit - A Coen brothers masterpiece, like all of them.

Winter's Bone - Jennifer Lawrence's coming out party

Most of those are all-timers.
