Can't wait to see Nolan turn a straightforward story into 25 separate stitched together backwards stories that fuse into one the last 2 minutes of the movie and has horrible audio!
Nolan did it again!!
From the Washington Post (4 out of 4 stars):
quote:
Nolan’s weakness for underscoring detracts from a few scenes that would have been better served simply by letting viewers hear the actors at work, without intrusion. (The film’s urgently propulsive music is by Ludwig Goransson.)
But the dialogue in “Oppenheimer” is scrupulously comprehensible — a victory for anyone who has found Nolan’s sound mixes to be unintelligible in the past."
And reviews are praising the non-linear storytelling:

Maybe my eyes are bad but who is that in between Kubrick and Cameron. Can't quite make it out

Yeah is that Fincher? I'm having a hard time seeing it.
Anyway, its very solid work, I laughed

I love the difference in replies to this thread and the Barbie critics review thread
Barbie critics: this movie is great!
M/TV: critics are just paid shills! this movie will be awful!
Oppenheimer critics: this movie is great!
M/TV: hell yeah! this movie is going to be awesome!

This is the boat I'm in. The Mall of GA IMAX screen (the only one in the area that shows the movies in 70mm) is almost completely booked for every weekend Oppenheimer showing until they change over to the Gran Turismo movie in mid-August. The only seats available are either at the 11 PM showing (which I'm not doing for a 3 hour movie) or seats in the first 2 rows, which I've done once and will never do again. The only option for us is Friday night, August 4th at 7 PM. It'll be a long 2+ weeks.

Oppenheimer currently has a 90/100 score on Metacritic - which is INSANELY good.

A 90 on metacritic is insane.

Yeah, that probably means this has a chance at best picture.

You would think, however I just don't see it. Best case scenario: Nolan wins an Oscar for Best Director, Cillian Murphy wins for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Robert Downey, Jr. wins for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
I don't think this movie will have the broad appeal needed to get it to win Best Picture. Not to mention biopics have a horrible winning percentage at the Oscars when nominated for Best Picture.

So is the 15 minute sex scene real?

Hope this is played relatively straight compared to his other stuff. I've said from the time that this was announced that this would excel as an epic biopic with Nolan's filmmaking prowess but in a more conventional format. If he falls into his usual schtick and gets cute with nonlinearity and temporal shenanigans, I think it's going to lose impact and fall flat. The guy is an exceptionally skilled technical filmmaker and this will be at its best if he really honed in on the technical aspects. Please god don't have massive exposition dumps while an overbearing score is pounding in the background while cutting to 15 different locations in rapid succession
Excited to watch and hoping it's a big winner. Tenet was a fricking god awful movie and I want to see him rebound.
