Literally nothing happened worth a shite in this movie and I’ve never been so disappointed. Episode 9 is such a toss up with where to take it.

For months after release the media and Disney tried to make it out like it was a small vocal minority that hated the film.

We have now moved to the stage where they call it "divisive" and try to make it out like it's 50-50.

I'm sure there are some people out there who for whatever reason loved it, but the majority of general audiences does not have a positive view of it.

This is what happens when bought-and-paid-for critics clash with general audience taste.

The way you know that Star wars is effectively "dead" is that the younger generation doesn't give a crap about it.

Star Wars isn't special anymore. There's a million other entertainment options out there. The toys and merchandise are not selling.

The international market doesn't give a crap about Star Wars either. The international market become a very big deal in today's modern box office and that's why Disney desperately try to shoehorn in some Asian appeal, which didn't work.

Also the older fans only really care about the older movies and characters. Go check the Star wars subreddit, almost every single fan related post is about Luke or Leia or Han or Darth Vader etc.

You see more discussion of the freaking prequels than you do this new trilogy. Nobody gives a crap about Ray or Finn or any if those other dishwater new characters. The new trilogy is not making any sort of lasting, positive impression.

The Star Wars brand is still valuable but mostly just for milking nostalgia for money. Disney trying to bank on recreating the Star Wars magic for a new generation was foolish.

In 30 years when people are discussing Star Wars they will be talking about Luke and Han and Darth Vader, etc

To say nothing of its handling of iconic characters from teh original films, the biggest sin I think that this movie commits is how it completely invalidates so much of the film that came before it and fails to push the trilogy forward in a meaningful way.

This movie made me stop watching anything Star Wars for few months. I listen to several podcasts mostly covering the expanded universe (now legends). Well had to cut it out, it made me sick to think about Star Wars. Almost like a breakup.

Fckk that damn movie.

It boggles the mind that they set out to make a trilogy without having any idea about the overall story arc and let each director just completely wing it movie by movie.

There's virtually no way to tell a cohesive and coherent story that way.

JJ Abrams essentially sort of passed on doing anything interesting in episode 7 and just set up a few little potentially interesting seedlings for episode 8.

Johnson then poured gasoline on those seedlings and lit them on fire.

So now we are two movies into a trilogy and absolutely nothing meaningful or important has happened or been established. It's been two movies of rehash and random crap.

Reading through the thread is interesting since we've had a little time for the board to settle down - but we still have the same general consensus being expressed.

There are a lot of good reasons to dislike the movie as a standalone product but the hatred it inspired amongst the most loyal fans (because of what it did to the previous movies) is a much bigger problem for the franchise.

I don't think this can be quickly fixed. The destruction of the foundations of the Star Wars mythology is what RJ wanted to accomplish and he absolutely succeeded.

I wasn't surprised that it was bad. After TFA totally sucked, I expected more of the same, but this was so bad that you had to think they were trying to make it suck.

A lot of it is trying to placate foreign audiences, but I think a lot of Trump bitterness slipped in, as well as a partial takeover by Kennedy's idiot feminist cult.

I streamed it for free as I said I would all Star Wars movies after TFA, so I'm glad I didn't pay to see this crap.

So I'm guessing it was...bad? Is that what people are saying?

I remember watching a movie about some Star Wars fanatics who take their dying friend to steal a copy of "Phantom Menace" since the friend isn't expected to live long enough for it to reach the theaters. Things happen, crazy adventures, etc etc, and they get him into a private screening held by Lucas and the movie ends just as the screening starts with one of them asking (paraphrased) "Hey guys? What if this movie sucks?" and it cuts to black as they all look worried at that prospect.

Imagine "Phantom Menace" being one of your last memories on this earth. Turned the movie from a comedy to pitch-black nihilism.

I remember that. It had a Carrie Fisher cameo, before she started looking like a man.

All of the buildup to Phantom Menace was about on par with the hype they felt in the movie. I would turn to stone if I was that cancer guy and this was what I fought for.
