There’s been a lot of talk about how the books just have too much information for the movies to fully capture.

One example I thought about today was in the Deathly Hallows part 1, after they take Harry from his home and fight all the death eaters in the sky: once lupin shows up he grabs Harry and points his wand demanding to know what creature was in his office the first time Harry came to see him (in the third book) Harry responds a grindylow, but you never would have understood that unless you read the books because they don’t show that in the third movie.

Probly a million more examples but this one stuck with me today

Also PSA: syfy is showing all the movies this week/weekend

Did they do a novelization of the Harry Potter movies? I hate when they do that. I'll never buy one of those again after that Lord of the Rings cash grab.

Listening to the audio books now after seeing all of the movies multiple times. Just finished The Order of the Pheonix. I am enjoying them. But my word is Hermione's obsession with "elf rights" bruuuuuutal in the books. Great call omitting that from the movies, should have been omitted from the books too.

ha ha, yeah that's a good catch.

I really hope they do a series a few years down the road after we get some time from the original movies.

Rowling seems to have gone all in for making as much money as possible, so it could happen. She is giving rights to a ton of people to make more merchandise that's for sure.

im sure there are plenty of examples, but to me, this doesnt matter at all. it still gets the point across to the viewer what lupin is doing and why he is doing it. the viewer doesn't need to know the answer in this situation.

The 6th was the worst with this. So much Voldemort backstory was left out, which was really the whole purpose of the book. You’re supposed to get a real sense of his motivations but none of that materializes. He’s just a “bad kid” and turned into a bad guy. So cheap.

I really liked half blood prince and deathly hallows part 2.

Edit: Azkaban was really good though.

Watched the movies for the first time at the beginning of the year and didn’t care for them and felt lost on a lot of it ....

So ive been listening to the Binge mode podcast where they do exhaustive dives into the chapters and it’s so so much better than the movies .

I’d recommend that if you haven’t listened already, they’re finally on Deathly Hallows

Azkaban is one that pisses me off the most, it's not the worst, but it's the beginning of the bad.

All the stupid smashing of things, especially the tree garbage, everything felt like all the actors were told to rush everything to get all the scenes in. It just felt wrong.

It also gave us this abortion

Professor Umbridge was one of the best things in the post Columbus era, that actress was perfect for the role.

I enjoy the movies, but that movie is a pile of shite compared to the source material, which is the best in the series IMO.

Which is kind of a shame. She has millions upon millions. Why would you need more?

I've said this a few times before, but the worst offender of this is the magic mirror Harry all of the sudden has at the beginning of the Deathly Hollows part 1. It was a mirror Sirruis gave him in OotP when Harry was supposed to start private lessons with Snape. Whoever held the other mirror would be able to communicate directly with the other. Harry broke it out of frustration at the end of Phoenix when Sirrius didn't respond to it, and he didn't re-discover the broken shards when he was cleaning out his trunk at the beginning of Hollows. Absolutely no mention of it in the movies, but all of this sudden they realized this important plot point needed to be in the movies.

The grindylow thing can just be explained as something that happened off camera at one point in time. But again just goes to show that typically the movies are more for the non book readers.

No idea, she gave a lot of her money away to charity a number of years ago. She use to be very protective of what she allowed, but now she has just gone all frick it. There is microtransaction mobile games, a lot of those stupid arse mystery box/bag toys, pottery barn crap, origami owl pyramid scheme jewelry, and just basically any other money grab thing you can think of to put harry potter on it.

I saw the movies before reading the books.

I still flew through Deathly Hallows on the edge of my seat.

That was the very worst of the movies. Really they should have written the final three films together, because most of HBP is bullshite filler that means nothing. I mean really, the Death Eaters just show up blackout drunk after Christmas Dinner to the Weasley’s House? Why wasn’t Voldemort with them?

And what was the point of the Ron and Hermione plot? Sure most of it is in the books, but JKR has time for that there. I mean really it’s as if a shitty producer skimmed the book, and then said that we had to give Ron and Hermione a major part of the plot in it. They removed most of the interesting parts of the book. Really they should have sidelined Ron and Hermione for a movie, and keep the narrative centrally focused, with 2/3 focused on Harry and Dumbledore, and the remaining 1/3 focused on Draco and Snape. It should have been the darkest of the films, and they had to remove the best scene because it completely tonally clashes with the rest of the film. That should have been the tone of the movie as a whole.

When Harry confronted Snape in the books, it was fricking epic where they’re shouting at each other over the roaring fires, and they mutually devistate each other. In the movie it was just treated as a fun fact after Alan Rickman took like 4 Ambien. Just awful.
