It’s an adequate but unremarkable prostitution of 80’s nostalgia, only slightly more competently executed than the dozens of other nostalgia pieces Hollywood has been shitting out for decades
Like…. the entire world of movie goers are telling you the opposite.
Movies don’t have to be perfect.
Just enjoyable. The entire platform was created to suspend disbelief and just enjoy.
If you can’t enjoy that movie I sincerely feel for you.
And to the dude who’s wife went to the arcade…. damn dude. Your balls must be in a major league vice huh? Sorry to you as well.
I sat by my Dad and saw this. The same way I did when I was ten. The nostalgia was more than just the movie. It was nice that the movie was so good as well.
On a side note. After the MI Dead Reckoning promo at the beginning and then the movie itself I turned to my dad and asked why is that I have to get a Scientologist alien to make me good movies?

When that next generation fighter stops in a dime and turned around I was like HOLY SHITE
That wasn’t quite “18 wheeler flipping over in TDK” level of eyes bugging out/mouth wide open but it was pretty close

Best movie I've seen in years....maybe a decade. Loved every minute of it. This film may save the movie theater experience for those that enjoy it....

We all generally consider Tom Cruise to be a bit odd in some of his beliefs, but I have to give him credit: he absolutely crafted a movie that
A) appeals to it's large target audience
B) doesn't seem to offend anyone, especially that audience
C) is technically clean enough that it could air on network TV with '1980's standards', and you MIGHT get 1-2 words edited out at most. And zero visuals removed.
Honestly= why is this PG-13 even, just the action? The "depiction" of combat? The fact that a couple of adults in their 50's are shown in a room together, with one (the male) with no shirt?

Maverick flying the F14 with Rooster. Rooster is looking behind and says “come on Mav, do some of that pilot shite!”
My kids took me for Father's Day yesterday and I gave an audible laugh at that. Probably my favorite moment of the film.
Overall, it was a great flick. Exactly what I expected with some cool little tidbits thrown in to make it better than expected. Will watch again.

A good movie, but it won't be as respected as the first by pilots.
Do pilots really respect the first one?
But you're right, the first one was totally realistic where they took a Polaroid of Maverick giving the bird to a Mig while inverted about 3 feet from canopy to canopy...

Anyone know if it is going to go back into IMAX theatres? I mustve missed the memo that it would only run for 10 days in IMAX

Mostly, IMAX lasts for the first two weeks and then the next big movie gets it’s window. If you want to watch it in the large formats, you gotta go that opening week.

I feel sorry for you that you think this is some amazing movie. It tells me there’s a lot of great stuff out there you’ve never seen. You’re missing out.

And I agree, Jennifer Connelly is gorgeous - but she’s also 8-10 years younger than the character she was playing.
? I'm a little confused by your statement. She's like 52 in real life. I don't think a 60 year old woman would be a mom for a pre-teen
ETA: I really enjoyed the movie. It was great with amazing visuals. My complaint would be the first jet disintegrating at Mach 10, with Mav only dazed and thirsty.

She’s 51 so either Mav was hitting on an 12 or 13 year old Penny in the original or Jennifer Connelly is too young for the part.
That y’all don’t even understand the universe of the movie you’re knighting so hard for is telling

Man, I haven't seen you be a contrarian on this board, so I assume you're being honest.
Why do you have this movie on blast?
Do I think it's an Oscar-worthy script or acting performances? No. It doesn't try to be, and nobody here is claiming it is (that I've seen, at least). What it is, is a very FUN movie, with lots of exciting visuals, and a whole lotta frick Yeah flight scenes in fighter jets (which to this day, remain the ultimate performance machines).
And... that's it. No social message from one side or the other, no awkward inclusiveness of anything out of place. No distractions.
The only things that come close to a message is the one admiral saying drones will replace live pilots, to which Maverick says "not yet"; and the little girl that tells him don't hurt her mother again.

I explained why. It’s not that I really dislike the movie per se, it’s fine. It’s the over the top praise that’s completely unwarranted and what I’m really responding to. I heard someone seriously suggest it’s possibly the best sequel of all time the other day, which nearly made me spit my drink out. People think this is in the same category as Terminator 2? Aliens? Is that a joke?
That people think so highly of what’s ultimately a pretty average script and performances just speaks to how far the standard for American movies has fallen, even among the classic summer blockbuster class.

If Mav hadn't already said it twice, it wouldn't have been that comical for Rooster to say it. But for him to repeat the same exact phrase in the same exact situation was freaking retarded and some lazy arse writing.
Actually, it was perfect. There was literally no better line that Rooster could have said. Perfect. I literally cheered quietly in my seat and the couple sitting next to me was doing the same. Perfection.

I made the same comparisons earlier in the thread. I think it may be the best sequel of all time; certainly arguable and IMO up there with the likes of T2, Aliens, GF2, Empire, etc. And I stand by that.
Don't you think your feelings for this movie are maybe a little bit........draconian?
