shite, it was a count hair under $50 for my wife and I to see IMAX in Hawaii.
Cost me about $32 for a single ticket, a popcorn, and a coke in the UK. This was for a standard showing.

Just saw it at Perkins Rowe. Loved it. There were definitely corny parts but that had zero effect on my enjoyment of this movie. The flying scenes were incredible.

I went last night and loved it, was honestly scared it would be a Last Jedi type disappointment. But as I posted above, it was everything a Top Gun should be, and nothing it shouldn't.
Tonight I went back, took my oldest brother. He's about Cruise's age, good athlete in high school and bears (or used to
) a pretty strong resemblance to him. He'd always been a fan since Risky Business, as I can recall Top Gun may have been his favorite movie ever. I remember he bought a bomber jacket at Goudchaux's after seeing the first film (we all had one by Christmas). Sometimes he'd go to a Star Wars or MCU movie, but never got into them. I didn't spoil anything and brought him, really hoping he'd love it. We did the Atmos show, got some seats dead-center.
Dude sat quietly and intently, locked in the whole time. I glanced over at him during the Coffin Corner moment, and he had a little grin like I hadn't seen in decades. We sat and talked afterwards, and even though it had been years since he's seen Top Gun (and as far as I know he didn't dig into stuff before going to see this), he knew all the old callbacks. Like me, Penny Benjamin threw him off, but when I brought up the admiral's daughter he said "oh yeah, I remember that now, they said her name in the last movie". I had to google to find the connection, but as soon as I brought that conversation/butt-chewing up, he remembered it.
Just a nice time. Great for a couple old guys like us to see something that called back our youth, and didn't shite on it. The action in this alone will carry it, but for true fans of the original, it's special.
We looked up the planes afterwards, the SR 72 and the SU 57. Cool shite.

Very average, a few nice moments but nothing special. Nothing really bad per se, just fine.
That some are saying it’s great shows how far American cinema has fallen

Lol I could not give less of a frick about that, dipshit. Nice deflection attempt though, I guess. Average movie is still average.
If you watch the original and the new one back to back and tell me with a straight face they are even close to comparable then you’re a liar.

I’m accusing you of being a fricking communist if you dislike this film.

I believe you will be in the minority of this opinion. But, hey you have a right to your -- actually, no. You're just wrong.

It has a few nice moments, but doesn’t have anywhere close to the heart of the original.
The love story is not compelling at all, the chemistry between Penny and Mav is, like the movie, average. It’s not bad, just unremarkable.
Way way way too may dumb little callbacks of lines from the original. The entire scene with Ice is forced and relies on the audience’s nostalgia from the previous film.
The new characters are largely flat, with only hints of personality. Even hangman is a transparent “new” version of Maverick.
The Rooster-Mav stuff is the best part of the movie, but even that they push too far forcing them into a F-14 together, again totally reliant on nostalgia of the original. This movie has no heart of its own.
They’re caught dead to rights but the movie telegraphs that hangman will save them, which of course he does at the last milisecond. There’s no stakes in the finale because you see how it’s going to end coming a mile away.
The original did the work of making you think Mav may actually not engage when he’s needed, and they build the relationship between Ice and Mav through the whole movie to pay that off. The new one does this in a hilariously watered down way, to the point that even Jon Hamm of all people seems listless in his performance.
It’s an adequate but unremarkable prostitution of 80’s nostalgia, only slightly more competently executed than the dozens of other nostalgia pieces Hollywood has been shitting out for decades.

Further, the whole thing is very Mission Impossible-esque, even from the opening scene. Though I did think Ed Harris was awesome. But in no way should a Top Gun movie be reminiscent of another franchise, and I like the last few MI movies for the record.
Speaking of, that office visit at the beginning was the one time it felt like Cruise was really Maverick as opposed to the rest of the movie where he clearly was trying to figure out on the job what Maverick would be like in his mid 50’s, to middling results.

Is it one of the best movies I've ever seen? No, not even close. But it definitely impressed me, and was 10x better than the original, well, at least the second half was. Well-done.
That’s how I felt. Nothing would be better than the original Top Gun. That said, I don’t think they could have made a better sequel. Great movie.

Actually, you’re right. It’s not comparable. That’s because Top Gun: Maverick is a 10x better film than the original.
