Just got out... it was incredible
Halfway through I was thinking that this was the perfect sequel in every way
By the end I think it may have replaced the OG as my favorite movie
Intense and amazingly well done

as many others have mentioned as well, I think they’ve laid the groundwork for a 3rd movie at some point. and I’ll be first in line to see it

I really enjoyed it, but I will say the final mission was less realistic than the final dogfight in the OG Top Gun. Still enjoyed that part, but not quite as authentic.
The camera and sound technology of today makes the fighter sequences so epic, though. Props to the folks who make that possible, including the real Navy pilots.

Just got back!! That was way better than I thought it was going to be and it had a little of everything in it. Extremely well put together story wise and very emotional! The action and special effects was something I’ve never seen in any other movie before except for of course Independence Day. Kidding. But yes this to me is the best movie of the year! Last time I remember being that much on the edge of my seat was Jurassic Park in theater. Absolutely loved every minute of it including all the nostalgia type scenes.

He was a student teacher at LSU lab several years ago. He came back a couple weeks ago and took all his former students to a private showing of the movie before it hit theatres. Very cool dude.

That is how you subvert expectations....

So I thought this was cool. I was reading an article over the weekend about filming the first movie. They couldn't use helicopters to film the jets because they couldn't get close enough without getting washed out and the videos were looking bad. So they found a very tall hill in the area and asked the pilots if they could fly low and close to the hill where they could get some better shots.
That's how most of the flying scenes in the original were filmed. They said they had about 100,000 feet of film of just jets flying. For the movie, they went through all 100K feet of film and would say, "This could be where Mav does X" and that is where "X dogfight could be." They think they used every single available, useable footage in the original and they even used some clips multiple times.
That's a big reason they never got serious about a second one for a long time. It's also why in the original every time you see Tom Cruise (or another actor) in the cockpit it's zoomed in real tight and there's a green screen behind them.
For TG: Maverick it's obviously a whole different ballgame. The cameras they have now can capture all of the great things this thread is talking about live and with very little CGI (probably other than explosions for major things). It's beautiful. It's loud. It's fast. F'ing incredible all around and it shows how much everyone from Cruise on down cared about this product.
I'm one of those that would rather watch a movie at home. I have an 85 inch TV with a good sound system. The trade off being able to pause it, start when I want, eat dinner in the middle is almost always worth the trade down from a movie sized sound and screen. Not for this one. I really do think this is one that should be seen live if you can. I am looking forward to seeing this on my home setup to see just how far behind that IMAX experience I am.
I said earlier I have plans to see it 2 more times with my dad and then a friend. Great way to bond with an old friend or with the old man or son. The nostalgia was perfect. Having so many call backs to the first could have been really cheesy if not done correctly. They did it all correctly.
I watched some Youtube videos of actual Top Gun pilots talking about it. They all loved it. They said they could nitpick a ton of little things, but for a movie and the restrictions Hollywood faces (budgets, running time, audience interest) it was as good as these movies get.

My only gripe. I always enjoyed how Top Gun was real world scenarios and outcomes. The ending was borderline Mission:Impossible type stuff. Getting shot down, meeting up, stealing a plane, taking off from a taxi way. Movie was great and the ending made up for it with the final dog fight scene. Awesome movie and definitely would watch again.
