True but the climate/terrain kinda killed that thought for me.
North Korea was my initial guess as they are the only country, to my knowledge, that keeps rebuffing their plans on obtaining nukes. Buying 5-th gen fighters from China would complete that aspect, but highly doubt China would have sold them their highest grade A/C (on paper). But topographically NK was the best fit, including water ingress to target without a flyover of another country.

She was actually "only" 48 when the movie was filmed, but point taken

First time I’ve seen the same movie in the theater twice since the OG Jurassic Park. This movie hit me in all ways.

Why are there so many deleted posts in this thread

My first thought was, "Hey, there are no countries that have both 5th gen fighters and operational F-14s!"
It would have been awesome if the 5th gen fighter seen in the movie was this hilariously fake Iranian "stealth" fighter:

Everyone who went last weekend has been telling their friends to go see it this weekend.
Haven't seen word of mouth for a movie like this since maybe The Dark Knight.

I hadn’t seen a theater movie in over 3 years. I have plans to see it again with my dad and again with my best friend. It’s that good. It will be a mini version of Titanic where millions of teens see it 10 times. Except it will be a bunch of over 40s seeing it 2 or 3 times at the theater.

Finally got to see it last night.
I really enjoyed the opening with the same music and same scenes with the newer aircraft. Gave you all the nostalgia feels. Then the Darkstar Scramjet is basically what the Auruoa was rumored to be. Pretty cool scene, though that break up at Mach 10 seems like it would be hard to survive.
I looked the character building and the way Rooster and Maverick bonded.
I really want to see it again in theaters. The flying scenes were just amazing. You could see the g forces on the actors faces.

It comes from when Maverick and Goose were getting their butt chewed in the beginning of the first movie.
Col. Egghead: “In the history of high speed passes, over two air control towers, and one admiral’s daughter!”
Goose: “Penny Benjamin”
Col. Egghead: “And you a-hole, you’re lucky to be here.”
Goose: “Thank you, sir.”

She was referenced in the “great ball of fire” scene as well in the original.

If it hasn't been mentioned, and I have not seen the movie yet. But Val Kilmers voice is AI created due to throat cancer.

Just got out of the theater. While the original was stylistic and innovative it lacked a substantive story. TG: Maverick had it all. Even though the mission was very similar to one executed in a galaxy far, far away, the action and tension was taut throughout and the characters were more fleshed out. And Jennifer Connolly is still smokin' hot. This movie deserves all the accolades it is receiving.

That’s right. I had forgotten that.

Thank you!
I was wondering if I was supposed to know where this love interest came from.

Just saw Mav. The fighter plane action scenes are exceptional and well executed for the most part, on the other hand the plot was half baked, and mission plausibility was really dumb. The group of actors playing mission trainees sucked. Hollywood is down on screenwriting talent and this is an example of that.
First thing, this brainstorm failure of a quick strike mission wouldn't be assigned to the Navy in the first place. The flying under the bridges on a combat mission....wtf was that?? The mach 10 test pilot scene had Cruise's ego all over it. Why do you have to be superman at your age?? The entire movie was filmed in California and Utah, just not authentic for a big budget blockbuster set at home and in the middle east. The deal with Maverick paying the bar tab for everyone is just redundant and ridiculous.
I appreciate the fact that maybe 15 young people across the nation will sign up to become military pilots after watching the film. We need everyone of them! This movie, and storyline however, is just overkill and too cumbersome to execute. Why even have a war scenario to make this movie a success, there's plenty of drama to work with by the nature of the job and the character history.
That's all I got.
