1st act setting up the story was a little hokey and boring.
2nd act with all the action scenes were fantastic.

there were at least 8 previews/trailers before it started, from an extremely wide range of genres
I checked my watch when the welcome message came on and there had been 25 minutes of previews.

The first movie was also scrutinized by Navy Pilots but they still loved the film
Hell, they had the Commander of the Blue Angels on staff as a technical consultant for the first TG. If someone wants to dEbOOnK Angel One, I imagine they're welcome to try.
John "Gucci" Foley is his name.

The line for concessions was ridiculous even though we got there early. I was thankful for all the previews for once

The movie had a lot of unrealistic moments.

And that Maverick feels the need to constantly explain G-forces to top gun graduates.
Because most of the theatre would be wondering why the pilots look like they are taking a huge shite during the flight scenes. The same reason why they re-did the briefing for the mission on the carrier as if the pilots forgot it. Audiences are dumb and need to be reminded of stuff.

Next time my lady tells me I'm too negative I will simply show her some of the replies in this thread.
Happy to be happier than some of you miserable sons of biscuit eaters.
I really appreciate knowing what the movie should have been going in and not being disappointed.
I really appreciate integrating women and minority characters without making a statement about it... Only because none of said actors or actresses sucked so I can safely assumed they got their roles based upon merit and not as a check in the box.
It may or may not wind up being as re watchable for me as dark knight, tombstone, or the patriot for me but I will purchase and support the movie to watch whenever i want, instead of relying on streaming services.

I feel like a lot of people will be disappointed if they are just holding out to see this movie at home on their living room flat screen.

I don’t know, man. Those 24” Onn sound bars and 43”/4K LCD Roku TVs from Walmart are pretty much on par with those high dollar movie theater systems.

This was my first theater visit in 5 years and I wasn't disappointed.
It was a different movie from the first, but it really was a nice character development on Maverick. It approached the subject of maturity and loss with a dignity I wouldn't have expected from the series while still making it fun, overall. The visuals were stunning.
Most of all, it's nice to watch a big, well written, well shot, directed and acted summer blockbuster without comic book characters...that wasn't controversial, that didn't need to check boxes, that didn't insult its audience's intelligence, it was just a good, fun story.
I'm hoping the success of this movie sends some messages to the industry that making movies fun is more effective than pushing "the message" constantly. I suspect the only message that takes, however, will be the usual "we need more throwback brands to abuse".

i was pleasantly surprised. Top Gun was my favorite movie as a kid, so it was interesting to feel that nostalgia, and the movie was good

Loved it! Hit the nostalgia well, the flight scenes were patriotic boner inducing, and it dodged the need to insert social topics into the plot (admit it, we were all waiting for Phoenix to take out Maverick no problem in training).
I thought the plot handled my most significant going in concern (plausibly explaining a 60-year old Maverick as a fighter pilot) very well.
The plot requires some hand-wavy things to work and provide the action but it was all justified IMO. But for the fun of it:
1) No way Rooster doesn’t know about the Tomcat’s variable swept wing beforehand (kid dreamt of being a fighter pilot since youth and his dad flew the F-14)
2) Have the F-35’s on alert instead of an in the event of an 5th Gen airborne fighter threat (which was spelled out as a threat beforehand).
3) For an extra 50 Tomahawks you probably could have taken out the SAM sites as well. Throw an SSGN that way if you don’t want the second surface ship there.
4) Mav didn’t register any kills since the first movie? He got 3 kills in a random oopsy in the mid 80’s and couldn’t wipe out some Iraqi fighter pilots in 1991? (It was mentioned in the movie that he served in both Gulf Wars and Afghanistan - tying the Top Gun universe to ours)

That one was curious. Although, not a hell of a lot of air to air engagements in either one (Iraqi pilots mainly bugged out to Iran in the first Gulf War, and their air force was knocked out in the first few days of Iraqi Freedom while sitting on the ground).
