It was 100% Iran given the types of jets they have. They are the only force hostile to is to use the F14.

I don’t recall ever seeing a welcome message from the lead actor to start a movie before.
I also haven’t been to the movies in quite some time but there were at least 8 previews/trailers before it started, from an extremely wide range of genres

That's what happens when it's not done just to do it and flaunted in your face for woke points. And why would Hangman be the best? IIRC, he never made it to the target during the training.

I’ve seen nearly identical events in other movies referred to as “pandering” on this board.
Edit: And Hangman being written as a pilot who couldn’t hit the target would’ve been written off as pandering and unrealistic.
The fact that you can enjoy this movie because you allowed yourself to shutoff the “hypercritical, always trying to connect to the larger culture war” part of your brain is sorta the point.

Watched this last night. I say this without hyperbole, but that may be the best sequel of all time. It's arguably right up there with Terminator 2, Empire Strikes Back, Godfather 2, Aliens, Ghostbusters 2 (yes, I think that's one of the best sequels ever), Back to the Future 2, etc.
It was THAT good.
The story was great and believable (for the most part). The cinematography was fricking excellent and gorgeous. The action was great and intense. The subplots were solid. The callbacks to the original were fantastic. The acting was good. Just about everything about it was absolutely incredible.
I've waited years for this, and holy shite did it deliver. It managed to call back to the original in some great ways while also not completely relying on the original or rehashing the same stuff from it.
I also loved what they did with Iceman too. Having most of his dialogue be via text message, and then work his cancer into the storyline affecting his voice, it was just all great. And Val Kilmer looked fantastic compared to that documentary of him from a year or so ago.
There felt like real stakes with this movie. And although nobody really died in action, they hinted at Mav or Goose enough that I was on the edge of my seat wondering which one was gonna die saving the other (or both). Also thought Penny had bounced too. So even though everything worked out, there was some solid drama/tension that had you wondering. But on the flip side, the humor was mixed in pretty well and was a nice reprieve from the other, more intense scenes. The humor with Mav and Rooster meeting up after being shot down was great.
The whole subplot of Mav pulling Rooster's papers, and why, and why he never told him that it was his mom's doing. All of that was great. Penny Benjamin was great as the love interest, and Jennifer Connelly looked great.
The pilots were all solid for the most part, even the women. It felt pretty organic rather than "let's cram women in here just because." Miles Teller did a great job. Jon Hamm and Ed Harris were both great (and both play great assholes). The guy who played Warlock was great, and I can't place where I know him from, even after seeing his filmography.
Literally my only point of contention was after they were both shot down, how easily and quickly they found each other, and then showed up at the airstrip. The movie made it seem like a few minutes or an hour tops.
But I chalk that up to creative license for entertainment purposes, so it didn't really bother me and I just rolled with it.
Well, and I also wanted Mav to say "Talk to me, Roose" at some point, but it never happened.
But that being said, this was seriously just about as perfect a sequel to Top Gun as could have been made. While I do wish we would've gotten it two years ago, it was definitely worth not only the wait, but the hype as well. Incredible movie, top to bottom.

Personally, I think danger zone could have been played once more when they actually are running the mission to the reactor.
Still fantastic and Dolby did it right

Get to the target, not not hit it.
I enjoyed this movie because it was a good movie, not because of any culture war nonsense that you and spleeny are reaching for.
